Avoid Nonessential Travel

CDC

• Nepal standing travel notice. CDC recommends that US residents avoid all nonessential travel to Nepal. If you must travel, such as for humanitarian aid work, then protect yourself by following CDC’s advice below.
• Ebola standing travel notice. CDC urges all US residents to avoid nonessential travel to Guinea and Sierra Leone because of unprecedented outbreaks of Ebola in those countries.

U.S. Department of State

• 06/12/2015 Potential Implications for Travel Because of Ebola in Parts of West Africa. The Department of State alerts U.S. citizens to screening procedures, travel restrictions, and reduced aviation transportation options in response to the outbreak of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) in Guinea and Sierra Leone. This Travel Alert will expire on December 12, 2015.

• 06/11/2015 CDC Feature Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS). Learn what MERS is and the current international situation.
• 06/11/2015 MERS in the Republic of Korea. The CDC recommends travelers to take these everyday actions to help prevent the spread of germs and protect against colds, flu, and other illnesses, including MERS.
• 06/11/2015 Zika in Brazil. The CDC recommends that travelers to Brazil protect themselves from mosquito bites.

WHO

• 06/15/2015 Current MERS-CoV outbreak situation in South Korea and China. Total confirmed 150 (149 in South Korea, 1 in China), 15 deaths.
• 06/13/2015 WHO recommends continuation of strong disease control measures. The mission confirmed that the virus is currently clustered around health facilities and found no evidence that it was circulating in the community. “However, continued monitoring for this is critical,” says Dr Fukuda.
• 06/12/2015 Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) – Republic of Korea. Between 8 and 12 June 2015, the National IHR Focal Point of the Republic of Korea notified WHO of 62 additional confirmed cases of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV), including 6 deaths.
• 06/12/2015 Measles – Chile. On 10 June 2015, the National IHR Focal Point of Chile notified WHO of 5 cases of measles infection.

United Nations

• 06/12/2015 Syria. “Government air strikes have reportedly killed more than a hundred civilians in the past week. Employing means or methods of combat which cannot distinguish civilian from military objectives..” United Nations officials.
• 06/11/2015 Regional security under threat in Central Africa. The Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA), a rebel group in Central Africa, continues to pose a threat to regional security particularly to populations in the Central African Republic and the Democratic Republic of the Congo according to the United Nations.

European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control

• 06/12/2015 Epidemiological update: Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV). As of 12 June, South Korea has reported 125 cases of MERS-CoV, including 10 deaths. China has reported one non-fatal case.
• 06/11/2015 ECDC updates its rapid risk assessment as MERS-CoV cluster evolves in South Korea. ECDC’s latest assessment continues to conclude that the current MERS-CoV outbreak poses a low risk to the EU. It highlights the importance of rapid consideration of MERS-CoV and strict adherence to infection control measures in healthcare settings, as well as suggests raising travelers’ awareness of the presence of MERS-CoV in the Middle East and in South Korea.
