Zika Virus – Returning Travelers

Recommendations for travelers returning from an affected area, based on implications of known risks as noted in the 2/5/16 International SOS Zika Virus webinar.

  • Virus is present in blood. Consider protection against mosquito bites for up to 4 weeks upon return to avoid potential risk of infecting a local mosquito capable of carrying the virus.
  • Virus is present in blood. Consider not donating blood for up to 4 weeks upon return to avoid potential risk of infection through blood donation.
  • Virus is present in semen. Consider using barrier protection (condom) for up to 4 weeks upon return to avoid potential risk of infecting sexual partner.

Recommendations for returning travelers shared in the previous Zika Virus post

  • Travelers showing symptoms compatible with dengue, chikungunya or Zika virus disease within 3 weeks after returning from an affected area should contact their healthcare provider.
  • Pregnant women who have traveled to areas with Zika virus transmission should mention their travel during antenatal visits in order to be assessed and monitored appropriately.
