Avoid Nonessential Travel
U.S. Department of State
- Venezuela Travel Warning. The Department of State warns U.S. citizens to avoid travel to Venezuela due to concerns regarding violent crime, pervasive food and medicine shortages, and social unrest.

- Plague in Madagascar. Although bubonic plague occurs nearly every year in Madagascar, an unusual outbreak of plague pneumonia is occurring in widespread areas of Madagascar, including in heavily populated cities of Antananarivo (the capital city and its suburbs) and Toamasina.
- Malaria in South Africa. Health officials in South Africa have reported limited cases of locally transmitted malaria in Gauteng Province, where Johannesburg and Pretoria are located. Because malaria is spread by mosquito bites, travelers to Gauteng Province should prevent mosquito bites.
- Cholera in Chad. The Ministry of Health of Chad has reported a cholera outbreak in Koukou and Goz Beida Districts. Because Cholera is a disease spread through contaminated food and water, cholera is easily prevented by sticking to safe eating and drinking habits and regularly washing hands.

- Togo Travel Alert. The Department of State alerts U.S. citizens to reoccurring political protests throughout Togo, some of which have been violent, especially in the northern city of Sokodé.
- Niger Travel Warning. The U.S. Department of State warns U.S. citizens of the risks of travel to Niger due to terrorist activity, kidnappings, and high crime.
- South Pacific Tropical Cyclone Season 2017-2018 – Travel Alert. The Department of State alerts U.S. citizens residing in or traveling to the South Pacific region about the ongoing threat of tropical cyclones affecting the area.
