Take Enhanced Precautions

U.S. Department of State

  • Maldives.  Exercise increased caution in Maldives due to terrorism and civil unrest.  A country-wide state of emergency is in effect. Security forces have been deployed in Malé to prevent public gatherings and anti-government demonstrations. Protests have also been reported in Maafushi where political prisoners are being held.

Global Disaster Alert and Coordination System

  • Taiwan. Earthquake 6.4M.  Feb 06 2018 15:50 UTC. This earthquake can have a medium humanitarian impact based on the Magnitude and the affected population and their vulnerability.

  • IndonesiaYou should be particularly vigilant during holiday periods including upcoming holidays such as Chinese New Year (16 February 2018), Nyepi (Balinese New Year, 17 March 2018), Easter, Independence Day (17 August) and the Christmas and New Year periods.
  • Anguilla.  Anguilla was severely impacted by Hurricane Irma on 6 September 2017. The process of recovery is ongoing and all services are working on the island (100% power network) airport and ports are operational and hotels and restaurants are re-opening.  The hurricane season usually runs from June to November. You can monitor the progress of approaching storms on the US National Hurricane Centre website.
  • Taiwan.  On 6th February 2018 a 6.4 magnitude Earthquake struck near to the city of Hualien in eastern Taiwan. You should monitor alerts issued by the Central Weather Bureau and follow the advice of the local authorities. There have been a number of smaller tremors since the earthquake struck. These could continue in the coming days and weeks. Local authorities are reporting a small number of fatalities and a larger number of injured people. A small number of buildings have collapsed, with others suffering subsidence and damage.
  • Bangladesh.  From 8 February 2018, there could be protests and disruption following the verdict in a court case against Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia. Be vigilant at all times; if you see a demonstration or are in a situation that could turn dangerous, move to a safe place. Stay away from large gatherings and avoid political offices and rallies
  • Pakistan.  Lahore has been subjected to a number of terrorist incidents over the last year. You should exercise caution in visiting the city. Busy public places and events are often targets, including transport areas, major international hotels, parks, shopping malls, religious sites, and the airport, along with government, military and law enforcement facilities.
