Security
The European Emergency Response Coordination Center reports on the terrorist attack in Cabo Delgado in Mozambique, noting a very critical situation developing since March 24, with deteriorating security conditions and thousands of residents fleeing the violence in the area. CNN reports that thousands of people escaping violence in Myanmar appear to have been denied entry to Thailand.
Natural Disasters
The European Emergency Response Coordination Center reports severe weather in Indonesia, Colombia and Sudan. Thousands of people have been affected and buildings damaged by heavy rain, strong winds, floods, and landslides.
COVID-19
International preventative measures against COVID-19, including entry restrictions and in-country mobility remain very fluid, and can be imposed without prior notice. Details for each country can be found in the travel advisories issued by the governments of the United States, Canada, the UK, and Australia. As an example, CNN reports Germany now requires a negative test result before boarding a plane bound for Germany.
Globally, Johns Hopkins University counts 127,749,710 COVID-19 cases and 2,794,174 deaths. The WHO COVID-19 dashboard reports that as of 30 March 2021 there have been 127,150,285 cases and 2,783,011 deaths. As a notable case, NBC news reports Mexico has revised its death toll tally 60% upwards, putting it at 294,287 fatalities by the sixth week of this year.
Vaccinations campaigns around the world continue. Our World in Data reports that 564.56 million vaccine doses have been administered globally. The WHO COVID-19 dashboard reports that as of 29 March 2021, a total of 514,524,358 vaccine doses have been administered.
The European Union says vaccine passports will be launched in June. The document is expected to show any of these 3 situations: the holder’s COVID-19 vaccination status, proof the holder has recovered from COVID-19, or the holder’s COVID-19 test results. At this time, it is only expected to be used within the EU bloc.
