Security
The European Emergency Response Coordination Center reports on thousands of people displaced in Cabo Delgado, Mozambique after the violent attacks of armed groups since 24 March. In Apure, Venezuela on the border with Colombia the security situation continues to deteriorate with multiple bombings occurring specially at night. The UN reports on the conflict in West Darfur, Sudan, where days of tribal clashes have left scores death and thousands feeling their homes. The UN reports as well on the deteriorating security situation in central and northern Mali, where blue helmets and security forces continue to suffer repeated attacks and significant losses.
Natural Disasters
The European Emergency Response Coordination Center reports severe weather in Australia, causing floods, evacuation of people and damage to infrastructure. Ongoing heavy rain in Colombia has caused landslides and floods resulting in fatalities and damage of infrastructure.
Health
The UN reports on the staggering high levels of acute hunger in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, now affecting one in three people.
COVID-19
International preventative measures against COVID-19, including entry restrictions and in-country mobility remain very fluid, and can be imposed without prior notice. Details for each country can be found in the travel advisories issued by the governments of the United States, Canada, the UK, and Australia.
As notable cases: Spain has extended restrictions for regions where COVID-19 mutations have widely spread. The order will be effective until April 19, 2021. The restrictions may be extended if the COVID-19 and its mutations cannot be contained in these countries (SchengenVisaInfo). The World Health Organization (WHO) does not back requiring vaccination passports for entry or exit, due to uncertainty over whether inoculation prevents transmission of the virus, as well as equity concerns (Reuters).
Globally, as of 07 April, Johns Hopkins University counts 132,544,153 COVID-19 cases and 2,876,084 deaths, and the WHO COVID-19 dashboard reports as of 07 April 131,837,512 cases and 2,862,664 deaths.
As notable cases: India reports more than 115,000 new Covid-19 cases in highest daily total (CNN). In Japan the Olympic Torch Relay leg in Osaka is now taking place in a park without spectators due to a surge in cases (CNN). Bangladesh sees new high in daily Covid-19 infections and deaths (CNN). In France the number of people being treated for COVID-19 in intensive care units has hit its highest point in almost a year (Reuters). In Brazil COVID-19 fatalities passed 4,000 for the first time yesterday (Reuters).
Vaccinations campaigns around the world continue. As of 06 April, Our World in Data reports over 693 million administered vaccine doses globally. The WHO COVID-19 dashboard as of 05 April reports over 604 million administered vaccine doses.
As notable cases: COVAX expects the vaccine rollout to exceed 100 countries soon (Bloomberg).
