World Status Report

This report intends to give the UTD Community a snapshot of international risks, and other issues as reported by the linked official sources from the U.S. and other countries.

Security

Over 7,000 people, including 4,800 children, were forced to flee Solhan, Sahel region in Burkina Faso, following the 5 June attack, according to updated estimate by DG ECHO partners (ERCC). On 7 June, two aid workers working for Doctors with Africa (CUAMM) were killed in an ambush in Yirol West, Lakes in South Sudan. The clearly marked humanitarian vehicle was part of a convoy returning from a health facility (ERCC).

Natural Disasters

Severe weather has impacted various countries resulting in casualties, displacement and damage.  Floods and landslides in Sri Lanka, Guatemala, and Colombia. Heavy rain and thunderstorms in Philippines (ERCC).

COVID-19

International preventative measures against COVID-19, including entry restrictions and in-country mobility remain very fluid, and can be imposed without prior notice. Details for each country can be found in the travel advisories issued by the governments of the United States, Canada, the UK, New Zealand, and Australia.  The UNWTO and IATA Destination Tracker offers relevant information on a destination status. The Timeline of EU Member States Reopening Their Borders  offers a list of opened EU countries for travelers, and dates of warned opening.

As notable cases:  Melbourne, Australia, will emerge from its fourth pandemic lockdown at midnight on Thursday, as just one new case was recorded in an outbreak that shuttered the city last month (WaPo). EU Parliament gives its final green light to the EU COVID Vaccine Passport (Schengenvisainfo).

Globally, as of 09 June, Johns Hopkins University counts 174,063,532 COVID-19 cases and 3,749,454 deaths, and the WHO COVID-19 dashboard reports 173,609,772 cases and 3,742,653 deaths. 

As notable cases:  Russia’s daily coronavirus cases surpass 10,000 for the first time in months (WaPo). WHO says delta variant appears more contagious and virulent than previously identified variants of concern (WaPo). Health officials in Fiji announced a new daily record of coronavirus cases on Tuesday as the island nation in the South Pacific struggles with its worst outbreak since the pandemic began (WaPo). Indonesia reports highest level of new daily infections since late February (Guardian)

Vaccination campaigns around the world continue.  As of 06 June, Our World in Data reports 2.22 billion administered vaccine doses globally. The WHO COVID-19 dashboard reports as of 08 June over 2.09 billion administered vaccine doses.

As notable cases: Japan expects to vaccinate its whole population by October (WaPo). President Biden’s top Asia adviser said Tuesday that the United States and its major Indo-Pacific allies are still scheduled to produce 1 billion doses of coronavirus vaccines for use in the region by the end of 2022 (WaPo). Pakistan achieves 10 millionth vaccination dose administered (Guardian). The World Health Organization says Africa is facing a severe shortage of vaccine at the same time a new wave of infections is rising across the continent. Vaccine shipments into Africa have ground to a “near halt”, WHO said last week (Guardian).
