World Status Report
April 12, 2022
This report intends to give the UTD Community a snapshot of international risks, and other issues as reported by the linked media and official sources from the U.S. and other countries.
More health and security information for each country can be found in the travel advisories issued by the governments of the United States, Canada, the UK, New Zealand, and Australia, and the CDC, ECDC, and WHO sites. Not all advise in these sites will apply to US travelers.

Security
- Nigeria. Gunmen attack kills at least 50 and dozens abducted in Nigeria’s Plateau state, residents and community leader said on Monday, the latest in a spate of attacks by armed gangs in northern parts of Nigeria (Reuters).
- Indonesia police fired tear gas and water cannons on Monday to disperse hundreds of university students protesting oil prices and an extension of President Joko Widodo’s stay in office (Reuters).
- India. Clashes between Hindus and Muslims during a religious festival prompted police in India to impose a curfew in one town and ban gatherings of more than four people in affected parts of Gujarat and two other states (Reuters).
- South Sudan. Fresh fighting erupted Friday between government and opposition forces in South Sudan just days after both sides pledged to uphold a ceasefire and try to save a teetering peace deal (Yahoo! News)
Natural Disasters
- Philippines. The non-stop rain from Tropical Depression MEGI has induced flooding in the provinces of Leyte and Southern Leyte in the Visayas, which has been severely affected by recent Super Typhoon Rai, and Northern Cotobato and Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) areas (ERCC).
- Colombia. Floods and landslides caused by heavy rainfall continue to affect the Antioquia Department (north of Colombia), causing an increased humanitarian impact (ERCC).
- South Africa. Severe weather, particularly heavy rainfall, has been affecting KwaZulu-Natal Province (eastern South Africa), resulting in casualties (ERCC).
Health
- United Kingdom. An increase in hepatitis cases in children has been reported in the United Kingdom. In England, approximately 60 cases in children under 10 are under investigation. In Scotland, 11 cases which required hospital admission, in children aged between 1- 5 years are under investigation. Most of the cases in Scotland presented from March 2022 onwards (ECDC).
- Europe and the United Kingdom. An outbreak caused by monophasic Salmonella Typhimurium, linked to chocolate products, is rapidly evolving in EU/EEA countries and the United Kingdom (UK). As of 5 April 2022, 134 cases have been reported in eight EU/EEA countries and the United Kingdom (UK), mainly among children under 10 years old. The outbreak is characterized by an unusually high proportion of children being hospitalized (ECDC).
- Qatar. Since the previous update published on 11 March 2022, and as of 5 April 2022, two new MERS-CoV cases have been reported by the Qatari Ministry of Public Health (ECDC).
- Chikungunya virus disease. In 2022, and as of 6 April, 12 240 cases and one death were reported. The majority of cases have been reported from Brazil (10 957). Since the previous CDTR published on week 10, 4 894 new cases and one new death have been reported. The five countries reporting most new cases are Brazil (4 371), Guatemala (316), Malaysia (85), India (56) and Thailand (22). One new death was reported from Brazil (ECDC).
- Dengue. In 2022, and as of 6 April, 293 332 cases and 407 deaths were reported. The majority of cases were reported from Brazil (167 602), and the majority of deaths are from Indonesia (229). Since the previous CDTR published in week 10, 110 830 new cases and 177 new deaths have been reported. The five countries reporting most new cases are Brazil (52 285), Peru (9 291), Philippines (7 372), Indonesia (7 062) and Sri Lanka (6 436) and the five countries reporting most new deaths are Indonesia (65), Philippines (49), Brazil (17), Timor Leste (14) and Peru (9) (ECDC).
- Sri Lanka. The Sri Lanka Medical Association (SLMA) said all hospitals in the country no longer had access to imported medical tools and vital drugs. Several facilities have already suspended routine surgeries since last month because they were dangerously low on anaesthetics, but the SLMA said that even emergency procedures might not be possible very soon (Guardian).
- Japan. H5N1 Avian Influenza Detected in Raccoon Dog (tanuki) in Sapporo, Hokkaido The Japanese Ministry of the Environment reported a case of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) virus in a raccoon dog, or tanuki in Sapporo, Hokkaido. Officials note this as the first case of bird flu being detected in a mammal in the country (Outbreak News Today).
Migration
- Uganda. Since 28 March, over 20,000 refugees crossed the border from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), fleeing heavy clashes between the M23 rebels and the Congolese army as well as attacks by the Allied Democratic Forces, ADF in North Kivu. While 12,000 Congolese refugees are now reported in the Holding and Transit centres in Kisoro district, an undetermined number of refugees (estimated 15,000-20,000) are still staying in the streets of Bunagana (ERCC).
- Ukraine. According to the United Nations, between 24 February and 6 April 2022, the total number of people fleeing Ukraine reached 4319 494. In total, 2 514 504 have crossed the Polish border; 662 751 the Romanian; 404 021 the Hungarian; and 304 983 the Slovakian. In addition, Czechia’s Ministry of the Interior reported 269 04 special visa concessions to Ukrainian applicants as of 6 April 2022. Outside of the EU/EAA, 401 704 people have sought safety in the Republic of Moldova (United Nations). The World Health Organization published on 7 April 2022 the sixth situation report on the emergency in Ukraine according to which the total number of affected people is estimated to be 18 million with approximately 7.1 million being internally displaced within Ukraine. No major outbreaks or other events related to communicable diseases have been detected since the previous update (ECDC).
COVID-19
- International preventative measures against COVID-19, including entry restrictions and in-country mobility remain fluid, and can be imposed without prior notice. The UNWTO and IATA Destination Tracker offers relevant information on a destination status. The Timeline of EU Member States Reopening Their Borders offers a list of opened EU countries for travelers, and dates of warned opening. The University Vaccine Requirement Checker notes universities that require a COVID-19 Vaccine.

Of note:
- China‘s financial centre of Shanghai started easing its lockdown in some areas on Monday despite reporting a record of more than 25,000 new COVID-19 infections, as authorities sought to get the city moving again after more than two weeks (Reuters). Cities in Guangdong Province tightened entry restrictions, began mass COVID-19 testing, and switched to online education for primary and middle schools after a handful of new COVID-19 cases were reported (SCMP).
