Natural Disasters

  • South Africa. Over the past few days, floods and landslides triggered by torrential rainfall have been affecting the coastal areas of KwaZulu-Natal Province (eastern South Africa), leading to an increasing number of casualties and damage (ERCC).
  • Philippines. According to the Philippines National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) and media reports, at least 53 people have been killed in landslides and floods after Tropical Storm Megi devastated the Philippines. The death toll is expected to climb, as many people are reported missing and there are many individuals injured (ERCC).
  • Chile. Authorities in Chile have announced possible plans to ration water in the capital Santiago due to a drought that has lasted more than a decade (MSN).

Health

  • Somalia and South Sudan. The alert from the World Food Programme (WFP) and Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) followed the latest food security assessments which showed that six million people in Somalia will face acute food insecurity in the coming months, unless the rains come (UN News).

Other

  • Malaysia. This month, the Malaysian federal authorities aim to conclude their nationwide trial of the AI sentencing tools, which they have said “can improve the quality of judgment”, though it is not entirely clear how they will be used in courts (Straits Times).
  • Chile. The country’s finance minister announced plans to allow Chileans to make limited withdrawals from their pension savings as inflation rises at its fastest pace in nearly fourteen years (Bloomberg).
  • China. The lockdown in Shanghai continues to rock global supply chains; wait times for semiconductor deliveries have increased (Financial Times), and three major Apple suppliers suspended production around Shanghai (Nikkei).

COVID-19

Of note:

  • China. Shanghai says it has released 6,000 more people from medical observation facilities, though the lockdown of most of China’s largest city was being maintained in its third week (ABC). The Chinese city of Shanghai warned residents that anyone who violates COVID-19 lockdown rules will be dealt with strictly. Millions of residents are confined to their homes and struggling to get hold of daily supplies (Reuters).
