World Status Report

This report intends to give the UTD Community a snapshot of international risks, and other issues as reported by the linked media and official sources from the U.S. and other countries.
More health and security information for each country can be found in the travel advisories issued by the governments of the United States, Canada, the UK, New Zealand, and Australia, and the CDC, ECDC, and WHO sites. Not all advise in these sites will apply to US travelers.

Security
- On 24 October, in Djibo (Soum province, Sahel region, Burkina Faso), a military camp was heavily attacked by a non-state armed group (ERCC). Attempts to attack civilian infrastructures (water points, marketplace) are also reported. 10 soldiers and 18 alleged terrorists died according to official reports. The number of civilians casualties is yet unknown.
- On 24 October, Myanmar’s military has conducted an airstrike that targeted a concert held by a rebel faction of the country’s minority Kachin ethnic group (KIO) in northern Kachin State (ERCC). The death toll as now reached 80 people and about 100 have been injured. The number of casualties appeared to be the highest in a single air attack by the military since it seized power in a coup in February last year.
- PNG official confirms 30 dead in tribal clash (RNZ). More than 30 people have been confirmed dead by Papua New Guinea government official Nelson Tauyuwada following fighting on Kiriwina Island in the Trobriand archipelago of PNG.
Demonstrations
- Thousands march on first anniversary of Sudan’s coup (Associated Press). Thousands of Sudanese demonstrators took to the streets of the country’s capital of Khartoum on Tuesday, marking the first anniversary of a military coup that upended the nation’s short-lived transition to democracy.
- Iran Charges Hundreds Accused of Joining Protests (Wall Street Journal). Authorities said 516 people would be brought to trial starting this week, the first major legal action taken to suppress the unrest that began in September.
Natural Disasters
- The monsoon rains continue to affect Pakistan (ERCC) by causing floods, landslides, flash floods, and severe weather-related incidents, which have resulted in a humanitarian emergency.
- Nearly 220,000 people across 15 coastal Districts of Bangladesh were evacuated to shelters (ERCC) ahead of the landfall of SITRANG, as reported by the Bangladesh National News Agency (BSS).
- Heavy rainfall has been affecting most of Benin (in particular southern Departments and the ones bordering east with Nigeria) since late September (ERCC), causing severe floods and rivers overflow (particularly Niger, Mono, and Oueme rivers) that have resulted in casualties and widespread damage.
- First Blood, Now Floods: These Farmers Are Battling Bandits and Climate Change (Vice). Devastating floods have killed more than 600 people and displaced 1.4 million. Nigeria’s food basket was already suffering from problems with armed bandits, but now swathes of it are underwater.
- Strong wind, thunderstorms and hailstorms affected northern and eastern France (in particular Normandy, Hauts-de-France, and Bourgogne-Franche-Comté Regions) on 23-24 October (ERCC), causing a number of severe weather-related incidents (particularly due to the stong wind) that have resulted in injuries, evacuations and damage.
- In the Southern Africa and Indian Ocean region (ERCC), climatic shocks and recurrent natural hazards, on top of economic and political challenges, crop pests and diseases, and conflict, continue to affect millions of people.
- Madagascar experienced its worst drought in 40 years in 2021 (ERCC). The combined effects of drought, low agricultural productivity, the impact of COVID-19 and a lack of essential food staples in the market, have resulted in a deteriorating food security situation.
- Women and girls are bearing the brunt of the worst drought experienced in Kenya for 40 years (UN News), which is exacerbating the risk of sexual exploitation, violence, and abuse.
- Heatwaves have become an unavoidable health hazard for many nations (UN News), but new data indicates that they are set to affect virtually every child on earth by 2050, the UN Children’s Fund, UNICEF, warned on Tuesday.
- PODCAST: Climate, conflict, and human rights at risk (UN News). Most people are familiar with the phenomenon of refugees, those forced to flee their country of origin, because of a well-founded fear of persecution or, in some places, because of armed conflict or natural disaster. However, conflict and the climate crisis is increasingly causing people to leave their homes in search of safety.
Ebola
- Uganda Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) outbreak update (ERCC map). This map shows the districts in Uganda impacted by the EVD outbreak, and the summary of cases and deaths per district.
- As Uganda’s Ebola outbreak intensifies, cases expand in Kampala (CIDRAP). Lab-confirmed cases rise to 90, including 9 more in Kampala, the country’s capital and largest city.
- Uganda reports worrisome increase in Ebola cases in capital (AP). Ugandan officials have reported 11 more cases of Ebola in the capital since Friday, a worrisome increase in infections just over a month after an outbreak was declared in a remote part of the East African country.
