This report intends to give the UTD Community a snapshot of international risks, and other issues as reported by the linked media and official sources from the U.S. and other countries.

More health and security information for each country can be found in the travel advisories issued by the governments of the United States, Canada, the UK, New Zealand, and Australia, and the CDC, ECDC, and WHO sites. Not all advise in these sites will apply to US travelers.

Health

  • The cholera outbreak in Lebanon is evolving at an alarming rate (ERCC). As of 25 October, there are 803 cases (suspected and confirmed) and 11 associated deaths. 305 of these case have been identified in the past 24 hours. Hospital infrastructure and human resources are struggling to handle the patient flow.
  • The cholera outbreak has spread over most of Malawi (ERCC). 26 out of 28 districts have now confirmed cholera cases and 24 districts have reported active cases in the last 24 days. A total of 5,285 cases are reported at 23 October, including 163 deaths for a Case Fatality Rate of 3.1%.
  • WHO identifies life-threatening fungal pathogens (CIDRAP). Despite limited data, new WHO report highlights 19 fungi  that represent the greatest threat to public health because of their ability to cause severe invasive infections and their growing resistance to antifungal drugs.
