This report intends to give the UTD Community a snapshot of international risks, and other issues as reported by the linked media and official sources from the U.S. and other countries.

Security
- Private security firms beefed up as armed robberies spike in Zimbabwe (news24). Retired police officers and soldiers are making a comeback in Zimbabwe, working for private security companies as armed robberies increase.
- Strikes in Syria hit fuel convoy from Iraq; Iranians killed (AP). Late night airstrikes in eastern Syria along the border with Iraq targeted Iran-backed militiamen, inflicting casualties, Syrian opposition activists said Wednesday.
- Mother of disappeared person slain in Mexico, 5th in 2 years (AP News). Another mother searching for her disappeared child has been killed in Mexico, the fifth murder of a volunteer search activist in Mexico since the start of 2021.
- At least seventeen people have been killed since Friday (Bloomberg) as Iran’s security forces quashed anti-government protests in provinces with large ethnic minority populations, rights groups said.
Demonstrations
- Sudanese police and demonstrators clash in the capital, Khartoum (AfricaNews). Sudanese police and demonstrators clashed on Tuesday in the capital, Khartoum. The pro-democracy demonstrators chanted “No to military rule” as they marched towards the presidential palace, denouncing last year’s coup that derailed a transition to civilian rule.
- Nationwide strike over inflation disrupts transport across Greece (Al Jazeera English). Greek workers have begun a 24-hour nationwide strike demanding higher wages to match surging inflation … strikes and protests across Europe this month, including in Germany, France and Spain.
- Rangers deployed at Governor House in Lahore (Pakistan Today). Rangers deployed Tuesday at Punjab Governor House in Lahore in the wake of daily protests and storming of the building by the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf workers.
Natural Disasters
- Recent heavy rainfall has caused floods across the Malay Peninsula in southern Thailand and northern Malaysia, and the Sumatra Island of Indonesia (ERCC). In Peninsular Malaysia, flooding that occurred in Kelantan and Pahang States resulted in 278 people being displaced to six evacuation centres. Flooding in Batu Bara Regency (North Sumatra, Indonesia) affected about 4,580 people and nearly 920 houses.
- Paeng death toll hits 158; P4.5 billion infrastructure damage (The Philippine Star). The death toll due to Severe Tropical Storm Paeng rose to 158 yesterday, with 34 still missing.
- Torrential floods impact food security in West and Central Africa (Al Jazeera English). Floods have destroyed this season’s harvest, while nearly 1 million hectares (2.47 million acres) of farmland across the region remain under water. Soil nutrients are being washed away, setting the scene for an even worse crop next season.
Migration
- EU agency says asylum numbers up, could strain facilities (Houston Chronicle). The number of people applying for international protection in Europe has reached highs not seen since well over 1 million people sought refuge on the continent seven years ago and could place strain on national asylum systems.
Health
- Uganda will close schools nationwide later this month after 23 Ebola cases were confirmed among pupils (AFP), including eight children who died, the country’s first lady said on Tuesday.
Humanitarian
- The number of Sri Lankans who urgently need humanitarian aid amid the country’s food crisis has risen to 3.4 million (AFP), the United Nations warned, up from 1.7 million in June.
- Ethiopia Seeks IMF Loan to Fend Off Hunger for 20 Million People (Bloomberg). Ethiopia is seeking International Monetary Fund financing to provide food for its people after the worst drought in four decades and a civil war curbed farm production.
