- Global events over the past year have had a substantial impact on the work of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), UN General Assembly President Csaba Kőrösi said on Wednesday (UN News). - Police in Mexico City say they believe three U.S. citizens found dead at a rented apartment were victims of gas inhalation (AP). The city police department said Tuesday the three were found unresponsive Oct. 30 in an upscale neighborhood on the city’s west side. They had apparently rented the dwelling for a short visit.
- At least 10 people were killed after a fire broke out in a building in Male, in Maldives, that contained a repair shop and residential accommodation, local police said on Thursday. Most of the residents were believed to be expatriates from India and Bangladesh, and were trapped in the fire without a way out, officials told Reuters.
Demonstrations

Gatherings
- Cop27: Sewage flows through summit centre in Egypt’s Sharm el-Sheikh (Middle East Eye). After attendees struggle to find food and water, foul-smelling water waste becomes the latest logistical nightmare at the UN event.
Health
- Misinformation hampers Uganda’s battle against new outbreak of Ebola (The Guardian) The Ebola outbreak was declared in Mubende on 20 September, sparking immediate concern among medical professionals because there is no vaccine for this strain of the virus. Cases of the Sudan strain have spread to the capital, Kampala, 150km from Mubende, with 18 cases confirmed so far – prompting the World Health Organization to update the country’s risk level from high to very high. But coming so soon after the Covid pandemic, the outbreak and lockdown have been met with fatigue, which has morphed into indifference.
- COVID cases are on the rise again this autumn. Here are the symptoms to look out for (Fortune) What symptoms should one look out for? The short answer: not necessarily the same symptoms that signaled COVID at the beginning of the pandemic. Researchers examined data submitted by tens of thousands of participants who logged their symptoms for research purposes via an app. Symptoms common among those who’ve been infected with the Omicron variant—currently responsible for the vast majority of cases worldwide—who have had at least one dose of vaccine include sneezing, sore throat, nasal congestion, persistent cough, and headache, they found.
- Poor access to safe water has exacerbated a cholera outbreak rampaging across Syria’s war-battered provinces (Reuters), where local authorities are struggling to contain the spread with chlorine tablets and vaccines.
- China’s new top leadership body reaffirmed Beijing’s “dynamic-zero” COVID-19 policy on Thursday (Reuters), as case numbers rose and authorities in the city of Guangzhou urged residents to work from home but stopped short of a city-wide lockdown.
