Security
- Intense fighting continues in Donetsk – mainly Bakhmut and Avdiivka – and Luhansk oblasts (ERCC). Other areas in Ukraine continued to be hit by missile attacks, including Kherson. Nikopol, in Dnipropetrovsk oblast, was shelled again on 28 November, after continued attacks during the past weeks. Addressing the Security Council on Wednesday, Rosemary DiCarlo, the UN Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs (UN News), warned of the devastation caused by Russia’s “relentless attacks” against civilians and critical infrastructure across Ukraine.
- More than 40 people have been killed in Iran during the week of Nov 14, including two teenagers, the UN human rights office (OHCHR) reported (UN News). OHCHR also reiterated concerns that the authorities have refused to release the bodies of the dead to their families, or making their release “conditional” on not speaking to the media.
- Although the past decade has seen a steady decline in piracy in the Gulf of Guinea (UN News), countries and their international partners must accelerate efforts to counter this singular threat, a senior UN official said in the Security Council on Tuesday.
- Since 10 November, Saudi Arabia has executed 17 men for what were termed drug and contraband offences (UN News). As executions are only confirmed after they take place, OHCHR does not have information on how many people may be on death row in the country.
Demonstrations
- China eases COVID rules after protests, keeps wider strategy (AP News). Chinese authorities eased some anti-virus rules but affirmed their severe “zero COVID” strategy Monday after protesters demanded President Xi Jinping resign in the biggest show of opposition to the ruling Communist Party in decades.
- Strike brings trains to standstill across Austria (Reuters). Austrian rail traffic ground to a halt from midnight, impacting around 8,000 connections and some one million passengers, as workers held a 24-hour strike on Monday in a dispute over pay.
- Riots in Belgium, Netherlands after Morocco win at World Cup (CBS News). Police had to seal off parts of the center of Brussels, deploy water cannons and fire tear gas to disperse crowds following violence during and after Morocco’s 2-0 upset win over Belgium at the World Cup.
Natural Disasters
- A landslide event occurred on 27 November in Yaounde Capital City in southern Cameroon (ERCC). According to media reports, at least 14 people have died in Damas District (outskirts of Yaounde). Search and rescue operations are continuing, as a number of individuals are missing.
- Heavy rainfall continues to affect various states of western Venezuela (ERCC), triggering a number of landslides and causing widespread flooding.
Health
- According to the World Health Organization (WHO), as of 22 November 2022, there have been 141 confirmed cases of Ebola virus disease (EVD), including 55 deaths in Uganda (ECDC). In addition, 22 deaths among probable cases have been reported in individuals who died before a sample was taken. At least 19 healthcare workers have been infected and seven of them died. There have been 79 recoveries. The weekly number of confirmed cases reported has decreased for the third consecutive week after the peak observed in the week 43, and no new cases have been reported in week 47.
- Since the last update on 27 October 2022, approximately 115 238 suspected cholera cases including 480 deaths have been reported worldwide (ECDC). Countries and territories reporting new cases since the previous update are Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Cameroon, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Haiti, Kenya, Lebanon, Malawi, Mozambique, Niger, Nigeria, the Philippines, South Sudan, Syria, and Taiwan
- Measles vaccination coverage has steadily declined since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic (CDC). In 2021, a record high of nearly 40 million children missed a measles vaccine dose: 25 million children missed their first dose and an additional 14.7 million children missed their second dose, a joint publication by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports. This decline is a significant setback in global progress towards achieving and maintaining measles elimination and leaves millions of children susceptible to infection.
- Sudan experiences worst dengue fever outbreak for more than a decade (The Guardian). More than 1,400 people in Sudan have been diagnosed with dengue fever this year in the worst outbreak in the country for more than a decade.
- Polio in Indonesia paralyses boy, sparks mass vaccination campaign (SCMP). Four children on the Indonesia island of Sumatra were found to be infected with the highly contagious polio disease that was declared eradicated in the country less than a decade ago.
Humanitarian
- In Pakistan more than 33 million persons have been affected by the humanitarian emergency caused by the floods, about 1,739 people have died and almost 8 million people have been displaced (ERCC). Widespread damage has been reported to critical infrastructure, houses and livestock.
- Following the mudflow event that affected Casamicciola municipality in northern Ischia Island, in the early morning (UTC) of 26 November, the humanitarian impact has increased (ERCC). The Italian Civil Protection reports, as of 27 November, seven fatalities, five persons still missing and 230 evacuated people across the Island. In addition, according to ANSA as of 28 November, five injured people, 11 rescued people and 30 damaged houses were reported. Search and rescue operations are still ongoing.
