This report intends to give the UTD Community a snapshot of international risks, and other issues as reported by the linked media and official sources from the U.S. and other countries.
More health and security information for each country can be found in the travel advisories issued by the governments of the United States, Canada, the UK, New Zealand, and Australia, and the CDC, ECDC, and WHO sites. Not all advise in these sites will apply to US travelers.

Security
- After formal detention of President of Peru Pedro Castillo, ordered for a judge on charges of rebellion, protests and riots are worsening (ERCC). Demonstrations in support of Castillo spread from city to city on the sixth day of unrest, with widespread vandalism and looting showing little sign of abating.
- As Tigray calms, Ethiopia sees growing conflict in Oromia (Associated Press). As one deadly conflict in Ethiopia begins to calm, another is growing, challenging a government that’s eager to persuade the international community to lift sanctions and revive what was once one of Africa’s fastest-growing economies.
- 2 crashes in Nepal leave at least 29 dead, 22 injured (AP News). A bus returning from a party crashed near the Nepalese capital on Tuesday killing at least 17 people and injuring 22 more, police said.
Demonstrations
- Rail and Royal Mail workers strike as action intensifies (YAHOO!News). Commuters face a second day of severe rail disruption on Wednesday as members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport union (RMT) are joined in walkouts by Royal Mail workers, and nurses prepare to take unprecedented industrial action.
Natural Disasters
- Unprecedented heavy rainfall has been affecting the southern, eastern and centrral Chad (in particular the Capital N’Djamena and the Lake province) since early September (ERCC), causing floods and rivers overflow (particularly Chari, and Logone rivers, that flow through the N’Djamena) that have resulted in evacuations and damage.
- Very heavy rainfall has been affecting the western Democratic Republic of the Congo, in particular the capital Kinshasa, since 12 December (ERCC), triggering landslides and causing flash floods, mudflows and rivers overflow (particularly the Ndjili, Nsanga, Mokali, and Nsuenge Rivers) that have resulted in casualties and widespread damage.
- Several parts of Bosnia and Herzegovina (ERCC) have been affected by floods, river overflow, and landslides caused by heavy rainfall, resulting in casualties.
- On 11 December, Volcán de Fuego located on the borders of Chimaltenango, Escuintla and Sacatepéquez Departments in central-western Guatemala erupted (ERCC). Several communities, including Panimaché I and II, Finca Palo Verde have been affected by ash fall. According to media, flights at the main national airport in Guatemala city were suspended, while a highway that connects the south and the centre of the country remained preventively closed.
Health
- Since August 2022, Cameroon has been affected by cholera and mpox outbreaks (ERCC) in the Far North, South-West, North-West and Littoral regions. Heavy rains and floods have provided fertile grounds for the spread of cholera.
- Covid cases explode in Beijing leaving city streets empty and daily life disrupted (CNN). Empty streets, deserted shopping centers, and residents staying away from one another are the new normal in Beijing — but not because the city, like many Chinese ones before it, is under a “zero-Covid” lockdown.
Humanitarian
- In Somalia, the cumulative impacts of five consecutive seasons of poor rainfall, persistent drought and conflict (ERCC) are expected to lead to a further deterioration of the humanitarian situation through at least mid-2023. Children dying in Somalia as food catastrophe worsens (Reuters). More than 200,000 Somalis are suffering catastrophic food shortages and many are dying of hunger, with that number set to rise to over 700,000 next year, according to an analysis by an alliance of U.N. agencies and aid groups.
- The war in Ukraine is a “relentless humanitarian nightmare” said the UN chief on Tuesday (ERCC), warning that the death and destruction afflicting civilians there will take years to overcome, and rebuild.
