This report intends to give the UTD Community a snapshot of international risks, and other issues as reported by the linked media and official sources from the U.S. and other countries.
More health and security information for each country can be found in the travel advisories issued by the governments of the United States, Canada, the UK, New Zealand, and Australia, and the CDC, ECDC, and WHO sites. Not all advise in these sites will apply to US travelers.

Security
- On 11 January, fighters jets were reported bombing military targets along Tiau river, separating Myanmar and India (ERCC). There are unconfirmed reports of casualties, and movement of population.
- The death toll from Saturday’s strike in Dnipro, Ukraine continues to rise (UN News). Humanitarian Coordinator Denise Brown condemned the immense civilian toll of the attack by the Russian Federation Forces and called for an effective investigation of suspected war crimes.
- Armed Insurgents Kidnap 50 Women in Burkina Faso (The New York Times). The women were abducted while searching for food in a region that has been under a blockade by extremist groups for nearly a year.
- Murder, kidnapping and arson: Nigerian pirates switch targets from ships to shore (The Guardian). More security around the country’s coast means attacks on commercial vessels have dropped – but small fishing communities are facing brutal assault.
- At least 68 killed in Nepal’s worst airplane crash in 30 years (CNN on MSN.com). At least 68 people were killed Sunday when an aircraft went down near the city of Pokhara in central Nepal, a government official said, the country’s deadliest plane crash in more than 30 years.
- The number of journalists killed worldwide significantly increased in 2022, following a decline over the previous three years, according to the UNESCO (UN News). In addition to killing, journalists in 2022 also were victims of other forms of violence. This included enforced disappearance, kidnapping, arbitrary detention, legal harassment and digital violence, with women particularly being targeted.
- According to latest UN OCHA reporting in Israel, West Bank and Gaza in 2022 (ERCC), 952 Palestinian-owned structures across the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, were demolished, confiscated or sealed by Israeli forces, there were 849 settler-related incidents. 209 Palestinians were killed in the occupied Palestinian territory and Israel, including 50 Palestinians killed in Gaza and 21 Israelis, including four members of the Israeli forces.
Demonstrations
- Venezuelan teachers march for better pay amid sky-high inflation (Reuters). Teachers, retirees and workers’ unions marched in at least six Venezuelan cities on Monday to demand better salaries, as the government of President Nicolas Maduro faces renewed challenges in its attempt to fight inflation.
Natural Disasters
- Heavy rains continue to cause massive flooding in various parts of the Philippines (ERCC). A total of 1,956 villages in 48 provinces have been affected by series of low pressure areas (LPAs), northeast monsoon, and shear line in the last three weeks.
- On 14 January, heavy rain and strong winds affected Medellín city in north-western Colombia (ERCC), causing floods and severe weather-related incidents that resulted in casualties and damage.
- Heavy rainfall, strong wind, and thunderstorms affected northern and western France over 15-16 January (ERCC), causing some severe weather-related incidents (particularly due to the strong wind) that have resulted in casualties and damage.
- Heavy rainfall has been affecting northern Peninsular Malaysia since 11 January (ERCC), causing floods that have resulted in evacuations and damage.
Health
- Worst cholera outbreak in decades kills 750 people in Malawi (AP News). The worst cholera outbreak to affect Malawi in two decades has now claimed 750 lives, a government minister said, while the World Health Organization chief described the southeast African country as among the hardest-hit amid ongoing global epidemics that are “more widespread and deadly than normal.”
