This report intends to give the UTD Community a snapshot of international risks, and other issues as reported by the linked media and official sources from the U.S. and other countries.

Security
- Rebel Clashes Flare in East DR Congo Despite Pullout Plan (Voice of America). M23 rebels continued fighting in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, local sources said on Tuesday, the day they were supposed to begin withdrawing from their positions under a regional plan.
- Trains collide in Greece, at least 36 killed, dozens injured (Reuters on MSN.com). Two trains collided in central Greece late on Tuesday and rescue teams were evacuating passengers after at least two carriages caught fire, the fire brigade said.
- Iran’s health ministry is investigating the cases of hundreds of schoolgirls across several cities who were poisoned (BBC) by nonlethal, toxic gas in recent months.
Demonstrations
- Sudanese protester killed as marches enter 17th month, despite talks (Reuters). A Sudanese protester was killed on Tuesday after being shot during a demonstration against military rule, the Central Committee of Sudanese Doctors said in a statement.
- Israeli police crack down, clash with anti-Netanyahu protest (AP). Weeks of anti-government protests in Israel turned violent on Wednesday for the first time as police fired stun grenades and a water cannon at demonstrators who blocked a Tel Aviv highway.
- Sri Lanka workers defy strike ban to protest rescue plan (YAHOO!News). Sri Lankan workers went on strike Wednesday in defiance of a government ban to protest a rescue plan for the bankrupt island nation, forcing the closure of hospitals, banks and ports.
Natural Disasters
- Since January, several forest fires have been affecting parts of Cuba, particularly the eastern Provinces of Santiago de Cuba and Holguín (ERCC), with 2,000 ha of burned area and an estimated 80 wildfires across the country. According to media reports, more than 70 people have been evacuated.
- Tropical Cyclone Judy hits Vanuatu, with another on its way (Al Jazeera English on MSN.com). Tropical Cyclone Judy has swept through Vanuatu in the Pacific islands bringing heavy rain and strong winds, and requiring the evacuation of some residents from the capital, Port Vila.
- The death toll in Turkey from last month’s devastating earthquake has risen to 45,089 (Reuters), the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority said, bringing the total toll including Syria to about 51,000.
Health
- Equatorial Guinea reports 2 more suspected Marburg virus deaths (CIDRAP). Two more deaths have occurred in people with symptoms of Marburg, which would raise the outbreak total to 11 cases, all fatal. Marburg virus, like Ebola, spreads through contact with an infected patient’s body fluids. It has a fatality rate as high as 88%, and there are no approved vaccines or treatments, though some vaccines are in clinical trials.
- US reports new H5N1 avian flu detections in mammals (CIDRAP). Mountain lions, a bobcat, red foxes, black bears, and skunks represent the latest avian flu cases in mammals in the United States.
Migration
- Italy migrant boat shipwreck: More than 100 people feared dead (BBC). At least 63 people, including children and at least one newborn, were found dead. 80 migrants, all adults, survived. Dozens remain missing. On board and coming from Turkey were said to be people from Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Iran. Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has urged EU institutions to take action to stop clandestine migrant boat journeys.
