This report intends to give the UTD Community a snapshot of international risks, and other issues as reported by the linked media and official sources from the U.S. and other countries.
More health and security information for each country can be found in the travel advisories issued by the governments of the United States, Canada, the UK, New Zealand, and Australia, and the CDC, ECDC, and WHO sites. Not all advise in these sites will apply to US travelers.

Security
- At least 36 people were killed during an overnight attack on a village in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (Al Jazeera English on MSN). The attack targeted the village of Mukondi, 30km (19 miles) south of the city of Beni in North Kivu province, an area plagued with rebel activity and which has been under military administration since 2021 in an attempt to restore order.
- Israeli forces raided a Palestinian village close to the West Bank city of Jenin on Thursday (Reuters), killing three Islamic Jihad militants they said were suspected of carrying out shooting attacks in the area.
Demonstrations
- Cameroonian Women Protest High Cost of Living (Voice of America). Thousands of women in Cameroon took to the streets on Wednesday, International Women’s Day, to protest the high cost of living.
- French pension strikes continue to disrupt power output, fuel supplies (Reuters on MSN.com). Workers striking in protest against proposed changes to France’s pension system continued to block fuel deliveries and reduce electricity production at several sites on Thursday.
- Israeli mass protests against reforms block roads and airport (BBC). Thousands of protesters in Israel have blocked roads and attempted to stop the prime minister flying out the country amid nationwide demonstrations against controversial judicial reforms
- Aurat March: Pakistani women rally seeking safe public space (Al Jazeera English on MSN.com). Thousands of women rally across major cities challenging patriarchy and highlighting issues such as sexual harassment.
Infrastructure
- Russia hits Ukraine with deadly missile barrage, cutting power again to occupied Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant (CBS News on MSN.com). Ukrainian energy company says, “countdown has begun” again, warning of potential for an “accident with radiation consequences for the whole world.”
Natural Disasters
- Heavy rainfall has been affecting southern Ghana (ERCC), in particular the Greater Accra Region, over the last few days, causing floods that have resulted in casualties and damage.
- The number of casualties is increasing in Indonesia (ERCC), due to the landslide occurred on 6 March in Serasan District in the Natuna Regency, northern Riau Islands, in north-western Indonesia.
- Since 5 March Philippines is experiencing an intense seismic activity in the Davao de Oro Province (ERCC), located in Davao Region (eastern Mindanao), the strongest reported earthquakes measured 6.0 M (on 7 March), 5.6 M (on 7 March) and 5.4 M (on 5 March). On 8-9 March, around 122 aftershocks with magnitude up to 4.4 M have been recorded by PHIVOLCS in Davao de Oro and neighboring provinces. As more aftershocks are expected, families are advised to stay outside their houses.
- Heavy rainfall has been affecting southern and eastern Zambia since early February(ERCC), in particular the Lusaka Province and the Eastern Province, causing severe floods, debris flows and rivers overflow that have resulted in casualties and damage.
- Heavy rainfall has affected western Ecuador in the past few days (ERCC), in particular Chone Canton in the Manabí Province, triggering two landslides and five flood events that resulted in casualties and damage.
Migration
- German cities struggling with winter influx of migrants from the Western Balkans (Euronews). This winter, cities in Germany faced yet another influx of refugees this time people from Western Balkan countries seeking to escape their countries’ harsh winters and poor social living conditions.
