This report intends to give the UTD Community a snapshot of international risks, and other issues as reported by the linked media and official sources from the U.S. and other countries.
More health and security information for each country can be found in the travel advisories issued by the governments of the United States, Canada, the UK, New Zealand, and Australia, and the CDC, ECDC, and WHO sites. Not all advise in these sites will apply to US travelers.

Security
- Al-Shabab Bombing Targets Regional Officials (Voice of America). In Somalia multiple casualties have been reported following a suicide bombing in Bardhere in the southern Gedo region. A resident told VOA Somali that a car filled with explosives was detonated at a building in the town’s center housing regional officials.
- Myanmar army kill more than 28 in monastery attack – insurgent group (BBC). Myanmar’s Shan State has experienced some of the fiercest fighting in an ongoing civil war At least 28 people were killed by the Myanmar army at a monastery in southern Shan State, an insurgent group said.
- Intense fighting in Bakhmut as Finland considers sending fighter jets to Kyiv (Euronews on MSN.com). Intense fighting continues in the Eastern Ukrainian city of Bakhmut as Moscow agrees to a 60-day grain deal extension and Finland considers sending Kyiv fighter jets.
- Colombian president accuses criminal group of breaking ceasefire (YAHOO!News). Colombian President Gustavo Petro on Monday said the Clan del Golfo, the country’s largest criminal organization, has broken a ceasefire and there is no possibility of negotiations with the group if they continue attacks.
Infrastructure
- In Syria, the Alouk water station has not been operational for the past 7 months (ERCC) causing critical drinking water shortages for some 500,000 people in Hassakeh and surrounding areas.
- No less than 55 countries are struggling with serious health worker shortages (UN News) as they continue to seek better paid opportunities in wealthier nations that have stepped up efforts to recruit them amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Tuesday.
- The United Nations and Turkey mediated a second day of talks (Reuters) today to try to extend a deal under which Russia allows Ukraine to export grain and other food products from its ports in the Black Sea. Since Russia and Ukraine signed the U.N.-backed Black Sea Grain Initiative in Turkey on July 22, millions of tonnes of grain and other food products have been exported from Ukrainian ports, helping lower global food prices from record highs.
Natural Disasters
- The UN OCHA reports FREEDY’s impact on Malawi and Mozambique (ERCC). As of 13 March, 101 fatalities, over 16,600 affected, more than 11,100 displaced people, 40 evacuation centres and 16 people missing in southern Malawi, bordering with Mozambique. Media also report five fatalities across Mozambique, due to the second landfall of FREDDY.
- UN OCHA reports tropical cyclones JUDY and KEVIN impact on Vanuatu (ERCC). About 80% of the population has been affected. 5,156 still evacuated people in 106 evacuation centres located in Shefa and Tafea Province and 28 damaged and inaccessible schools. National authorities, NGOs and humanitarian partners are providing help for those most affected.
- In northern Australia, heavy rainfall has been affecting in particular the northern Northern Territory and the neighbouring far northern Queensland since 10 March (ERCC), causing floods and the rising of rivers that have resulted in evacuations and damage.
- In Peru, the number of casualties is increasing (ERCC) following heavy rainfall, floods and landslides that have been affecting several Departments since the beginning of March.
Health
- European scientists highlight worrisome H5N1 avian flu mutations (CIDRAP). Though current 2.3.4.4b clade H5N1 viruses still prefer avian receptors, scientists are closely watching mutations that may influence virulence and replication in mammals.
