This report intends to give the UTD Community a snapshot of international risks, and other issues as reported by the linked media and official sources from the U.S. and other countries.
More health and security information for each country can be found in the travel advisories issued by the governments of the United States, Canada, the UK, New Zealand, and Australia, and the CDC, ECDC, and WHO sites. Not all advise in these sites will apply to US travelers.

Security
- Angola to send military to DRC after failed ceasefire (The EastAfrican on MSN.com). Violence in eastern DRC is escalating with M23 rebels and government troops blaming each other for ceasefire collapse. Fighting in villages around the city of Goma has intensified.

- North of Bakhmut, another key battle tests Ukraine’s defences (Reuters). What Ukrainian forces have long described in the city of Bakhmut is also playing out to the northin Luhansk region – more Russian troops, weapons and aggressive tactics that Moscow hopes will produce a badly needed breakthrough.
Demonstrations
- Thousands of Senegal opposition supporters begin 3-day protest (Al Jazeera English). Tensions are growing in Senegal even as President Macky Sall could vie for a controversial third term – that the opposition says is unconstitutional – in the 2024 election.
- Clashes erupt in Pakistan as police try to arrest Imran Khan (Associated Press). Clashes between Pakistan’s police and supporters of former Prime Minister Imran Khan persisted outside his home in the eastern city of Lahore on Wednesday, a day after officers went to arrest him for failing to appear in court on graft charges.
Natural Disasters
- Very heavy rainfall associated with the passage of FREDDY across central-northern Mozambique and southern Malawi (ERCC) caused severe floods and mudslides that resulted in casualties and widespread damage.
- Heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and strong winds affected northern and central regions of Thailand (ERCC) including the Bangkok area on 12-14 march, resulting in damage.
- Heavy rainfall, heavy snowfall, strong winds and thunderstorms continued to affect northern and central California and western Nevada over the last week (ERCC), causing floods, flash floods, snowmelts, rivers overflow and a number of strong wind-related incidents that have resulted in casualties and damage.
- A landslide triggered by heavy rainfall occurred in the Jorge Teixeira neighbourhood on 12 March, in the Manaus City in north-western Brazil (ERCC), resulting in casualties and damage.
Health
- H5N1 avian flu found in skunk deaths from Vancouver area (CIDRAP). The skunks were found dead in residential areas of Vancouver and a city just south of there, prompting warnings about handling sick and dead animals.
