This report intends to give the UTD Community a snapshot of international risks, and other issues as reported by the linked media and official sources from the U.S. and other countries.
More health and security information for each country can be found in the travel advisories issued by the governments of the United States, Canada, the UK, New Zealand, and Australia, and the CDC, ECDC, and WHO sites. Not all advise in these sites will apply to US travelers.

Security
- It is estimated that up to one million people in Iraq have disappeared over the past five decades (UN News) – a crisis that continues today, UN independent human rights experts said on Tuesday.
- At least 10 students abducted by gunmen in northwest Nigeria (AP News), authorities said on Tuesday. Students from the Government Secondary School in Kaduna state were abducted during an attack Monday, however it was unclear exactly where they were kidnapped from.
- General Staff: Russia launches 3 missiles, 47 airstrikes in the past day (YAHOO!News). Russian forces continued concentrating efforts on advancing along Lyman, Bakhmut, Avdiivka, and Marinka directions in Donetsk oblast as Ukrainian soldiers repelled 60 attacks.
- Clashes erupt inside the al-Aqsa mosque after Israeli forces enter (CNN on MSN.com). Israeli police clashed with Palestinians inside the al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem’s Old City early on Wednesday, just days after a Palestinian man was killed outside the holy site.
- Haiti rights group records three-fold rise in kidnappings for early 2023 (Reuters). At least 389 kidnappings were registered in Haiti in the first three months of this year, rights group CARDH said on Tuesday, marking a three-fold increase from the last quarter of 2022 as gangs look to recoup losses from international sanctions.
Demonstrations
- French unions to keep up pensions protest after talks with PM fail (The Gazette). France’s labour unions will keep up their fight against a planned rise of the legal retirement age, they said on Wednesday, after a meeting with Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne failed to end months of gridlock over a deeply unpopular reform.
Natural Disasters
- In India, a massive avalanche devastated the 15th Mile near Gangtok with the Nathu La Pass on 4 April (ERCC), trapping five to six vehicles with around 30 people under the snow. Seven bodies were brought out of the snow, and 23 others were rescued alive, including six tourists.
- The West Nusa Tenggara Province in southern Indonesia is experiencing heavy rainfall and widespread floods (ERCC), that have resulted in casualties and damage.
- Heavy rainfall has been affecting several regions of Ethiopia since the start of March (ERCC), particularly in the Somali Region, causing widespread floods, the overflow of rivers and leading to casualties and damage.
- The Nevado del Ruiz volcano, located on the border of the Departments of Caldas and Tolima in central western Colombia (ERCC), about 129 km west of the capital city Bogotá is increasing its volcanic seismic activity, leading to evacuation of nearby areas and declaration of a public calamity.
- Heavy rainfall has been hitting most parts of Peru since December (ERCC), causing floods and landslides, and leading to an increasing number of affected people.
Health
- More botulism cases tied to weight loss procedure reported in Europe (CIDRAP). The off-label use of the product occurred at two Turkish hospitals, and the outbreak has now sickened 87 people.
