This report intends to give the UTD Community a snapshot of international risks, and other issues as reported by the linked media and official sources from the U.S. and other countries.
More health and security information for each country can be found in the travel advisories issued by the governments of the United States, Canada, the UK, New Zealand, and Australia, and the CDC, ECDC, and WHO sites. Not all advise in these sites will apply to US travelers.

Security
- Gunmen Abduct 25 Cameroonians on Nigeria Border (VOA News). Security forces in Cameroon are searching for at least 25 villagers that gunmen abducted along its border with Nigeria. Locals are calling on the governments to stop armed gangs operating on both sites of the border.
- 5 arrested after suspected cartel killings near Cancún beach resort (Washington Post). Mexican government officials sought to reassure tourists in the popular resort destination of Cancún that they are safe after four bodies were found in the area’s hotel zone this week.
- Israel raids al-Aqsa Mosque for second time in twenty-four hours (CNN). Israeli forces said the second raid was in response to “law-breaking juveniles” (CNN) throwing fireworks and stones. During yesterday’s raid at the mosque compound, home to sites revered by Jews and Muslims, Israeli police arrested more than three hundred Palestinians. That raid prompted an exchange of rocket fire between Israel and militants in the Gaza Strip.
Demonstrations
- France braces for new protests after pensions deadlock (Yahoo News). France on Thursday braced for another day of protests and strikes to denounce President Emmanuel Macron’s pension reform after talks between the government and unions ended in deadlock.
Natural Disasters
- Over the last 2 decades, the number of low- and middle-income countries exposed to climate extremes increased from 76% to 98% (European Commission). By 2050, over 200 million people could need humanitarian assistance every year due to climate-related disasters.
- On 4-5 April, heavy rainfall affected four Districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province in north-western Pakistan (ERCC), causing severe weather-related incidents that resulted in casualties and damage. The affected Districts are Lower Kohistan, Mardan, Hangu and Bajaur.
- On 31 March – 2 April, Soccsksargen Region in south-western Mindanao in the Philippines (ERCC), experienced heavy rainfall that caused flash floods and resulting in widespread damage.
- On 2 April, heavy rainfall affected Taita–Taveta County in southern Kenya (ERCC), causing flash floods and resulting in casualties and damage.
Health
- Canada reports H5N1 avian flu in pet dog (CIDRAP). The dog got sick after chewing on a dead goose and died. A necropsy revealed respiratory symptoms involvement, and further investigation is underway.
- Mozambique Battles Cholera in Record Cyclone’s Aftermath (All Africa on MSN.com). Cyclone Freddy killed hundreds of people in February and March as it pummeled Madagascar, Malawi, and Mozambique. While the long-running storm’s victims were mostly in Malawi, floodwaters in Mozambique have created a fresh threat there from cholera.
- More Than 34 Million Could Face Hunger by June in West Africa, IRC Says (Bloomberg). More than 34 million people across West Africa’s Sahel region could face hunger by June as conflict, climate change and economic turmoil following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has deepened a humanitarian crisis, the International Rescue Committee said.
