Security
- Heavy gunfire, air strikes and shelling continues in Khartoum and in the peripheries (ERCC). The fighting has heavily damaged multiple hospitals in Khartoum and other cities, with some rendered completely out of service. Many hospitals have had to close due to the proximity to the fighting or the inability of staff to reach the health facilities. Hospitals are running out of blood, transfusion equipment, intravenous fluids and other vital supplies. Power and water cuts are affecting the functionality of health facilities, and there are reports of shortages of fuel for hospital generators.
- Gang violence has reached unprecedented levels in Haiti (ERCC). The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights reported 1,119 kidnappings (three kidnappings per day) and 16,470 incidents of gender-based violence in 2022. Shootings and abductions of teachers and students have increased nine-fold in one year.
- Suspected shooting attack in Jerusalem wounds 2 Israeli men (AP). A Palestinian gunman shot and wounded two Israelis in Jerusalem on Tuesday, police said, the latest bloodshed in a year-long cycle of violence that shows no sign of abating.
Demonstrations
- France to witness 12th nationwide strike against Macron’s pension law (Reuters on MSN.com). Protesters hold a drawing depicting a portrait of French President Emmanuel Macron during a demonstration as part of the tenth day of nationwide strikes and protests against French government.
- Nigerian aviation employees on Monday blocked roads to the domestic terminal of Lagos airport (Al Jazeera on MSN.com), slowing traffic and threatening to delay flights as they began a two-day strike to protest working conditions and wages.
Natural Disasters
- On 9 April, heavy rainfall triggered floods and flash floods in Davao del Sur Province in southern Philippines (ERCC), resulting in population displacements.
- The activity of the Shiveluch volcano, located in the eastern Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia (ERCC), continues but is decreasing.
- Since 12 April, heavy rainfall has been affecting western Tanzania (ERCC), causing river overflows (particularly the Talanda River) and floods that have resulted in casualties and damage.
- On 14 April, a landslide triggered by heavy rainfall occurred in the Atavillos Bajo District in the Huaral Province in the Lima Department (ERCC), resulting in casualties and damage.
- On 15 April, a landslide triggered by heavy rainfall occurred in the Parigi Moutong Regency in central Indonesia (ERCC), resulting in casualties.
- On 18 April, a landslide caused by a thunderstorm affected the main road of the Khyber Pass in north-western Pakistan (ERCC), leading to casualties.
- On 15 April, a wildfire occurred in the area of Cap Peyrefite in south-eastern France on the border with Spain (ERCC), causing evacuations and damage.
Health
- The number of mpox cases have greatly decreased since the peak in July last year. However, there is risk of an increase in the coming spring and summer season due to festivities and increased holiday travel (ECDC). Early diagnosis, isolation, partner notification and contact tracing remain key for the effective control of this outbreak and should be supported by appropriate vaccination- and behaviour change strategies.
- Equatorial Guinea’s Marburg outbreak expands further (CIDRAP). The outbreak has expanded to a fourth province, and epidemiologic links aren’t clear for patients in multiple areas—a worrisome sign.
- Soaring temperatures bring school closures in parts of India (Reuters on MSN.com). Authorities in parts of India have shut schools for a week after they recorded sweltering temperatures of more than 40 Celsius (104 Fahrenheit).
