This report intends to give the UTD Community a snapshot of international risks, and other issues as reported by the linked media and official sources from the U.S. and other countries.

More health and security information for each country can be found in the travel advisories issued by the governments of the United States, Canada, the UK, New Zealand, and Australia, and the CDC, ECDC, and WHO sites. Not all advise in these sites will apply to US travelers.

Security

  • UN says aid trucks looted in ‘volatile’ Sudan, calls for safe passage (Reuters). U.N. aid chief Martin Griffiths said on Wednesday that he was seeking assurances from Sudan’s warring factions over the safe delivery of aid after six trucks of humanitarian supplies were looted and air strikes in Khartoum undermined a new ceasefire. Sudan Fighting Continues as More Flee (VOA). Fierce fighting between rival generals raged on in Sudan Tuesday despite the latest truce, as warnings multiplied of the potential for a “catastrophic” humanitarian crisis with hundreds of thousands of refugees.
  • Israeli airstrike in Gaza kills 1 after prisoner’s death (AP). At least one person was killed and five were wounded in an Israeli airstrike in the Gaza Strip, Palestinian health officials said Wednesday, after hours of fighting between Israel and Palestinian militants in the coastal enclave following the death or a prominent Palestinian militant.

Natural Disasters

  • Indonesia – Floods (ERCC). Heavy rainfall has been affecting central Indonesia (in particular the Java Island) since 30 April, causing floods that have resulted in population displacements and damage.
  • Pakistan – Severe weather, update (ERCC). Heavy rainfall and thunderstorms continued to affect south-western Pakistan (Balochistan Province) and north-western Pakistan (the neighbouring Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province) since 29 April, causing rivers overflow, flash floods and a number of severe weather-related incidents that have resulted in casualties and damage.
  • Canada – Floods (ERCC). Over the past few days, heavy rain and strong winds affected parts of Quebec Province (eastern Canada), causing floods, a river overflow and resulting in casualties and evacuations.
  • USA – Dust storm (ERCC). Strong winds affected central Illinois (Midwest region, USA) on 1 May, causing a widespread dust storm and a number of severe weather-related incidents that have resulted in casualties.
  • Uganda, Kenya – Floods. (ERCC). Heavy rainfall has been affecting south-western and eastern Uganda and the neighbouring western Kenya over the last week, causing floods, rivers overflow and landslides that have resulted in casualties and damage.
  • Vietnam – Severe weather and floods (ERCC). On 28-30 April, heavy rain affected northern Vietnam, causing floods and resulting in damage.
