World Status Report

This report intends to give the UTD Community a snapshot of international risks, and other issues as reported by the linked media and official sources from the U.S. and other countries.
More health and security information for each country can be found in the travel advisories issued by the governments of the United States, Canada, the UK, New Zealand, and Australia, and the CDC, ECDC, and WHO sites. Not all advise in these sites will apply to US travelers.

Security
- Sudan – Heavy fighting, update (ERCC). As of 9 May, the death toll from the ongoing clashes in Sudan has risen to 604 people, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). More than 5,100 people have been wounded in the conflict. In Khartoum, only 16% of health facilities remain functional.
- India – Manipur Violence, continued unrest (ERCC). The violent clashes in Manipur have resulted in 54 deaths and 23,000 civilians displaced so far. All key sites and routes in Manipur state are experiencing a strong security presence, including with airlifting of army personnel, members of the rapid action force, and central police units.
- Russia has told people to leave 18 settlements in the Zaporizhzhia region last week, including Enerhodar near the plant, ahead of Kyiv’s anticipated offensive (BBC). The UN’s nuclear watchdog warned a “severe nuclear accident” could occur.
- Russian-controlled Transnistria asks Moscow for more ‘peacekeepers’ (YAHOO!News). Leonid Manakov, who represents Transnistria in Moscow, requested more Russian “peacekeepers” due to the “deteriorating security situation” in an interview with Russian state media Sputnik on May 8.
- Israeli forces carried out new strikes (Reuters) on targets linked to the Palestinian Islamic Jihad militant group. At least one person died, medical officials said. Israeli strikes on the Gaza Strip the previous day killed at least thirteen people, ten of them civilians.
Demonstrations
- An Islamabad court ruled that former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan can be held for eight days (AP) of questioning following his dramatic arrest on corruption charges yesterday. The arrest sparked protests across the country; authorities have detained nearly a thousand people (CNN) in Punjab Province and reduced internet access in response to the demonstrations. At least four people have been killed in clashes at protests.
Natural Disasters
- Philippines – Floods (ERCC). Heavy rainfall has been affecting Mindanao (in particular the Davao Region, south-eastern Mindanao) and Vysayas (in particular the Western Visayas Region) since 6 May, causing floods that have resulted in evacuations and damage.
- Russia – Wildfires (ERCC). Several wildfires have been occurring across the Oblasts of Kurgan and Tyumen in the southern Ural Mountains area and western Siberia (southern Russia), resulting in casualties and damage.
- Canada – Wildfires (ERCC). Several forest fires continue to burn across central and northern Alberta Province (south-western Canada) since the past week, causing evacuations and damage. More than 24,000 people evacuated in Western Canada as 103 wildfires burn (CNBC). Over 24,000 residents throughout Western Canada have been ordered to evacuate their homes to escape active wildfires in the province of Alberta.
- Afghanistan – Flash floods (ERCC). Heavy rainfall affected Nangarhar Province (eastern Afghanistan) on 5 May, causing flash floods that resulted in casualties and damage.
- Democratic Republic of the Congo – Floods, flash floods and landslide, update (ERCC). According to UNICEF, at least 422 people have died following floods and flash floods triggered by heavy rainfall on 2-4 May across the Kalehe Territory (South-Kivu Province, eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo). The numbers of casualties are likely to increase in the coming days.
- China – Floods (ERCC). Since May 5, floods caused heavy rainfalls have affected over 497,000 people in 43 counties of 7 cities in Jiangxi Province, China. 14,000 people have been evacuated to emergency shelters, and 2,482 people need emergency living assistance.
- Indonesia – Floods (ERCC). Heavy rainfall has been affecting northern Indonesia (in particular the central-northern Sumatra Island) since 5 May, causing floods that have resulted in population displacements and damage.
Health
- The WHO Director-General concurs with the advice offered by the Committee regarding the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic (WHO). He determines that COVID-19 is now an established and ongoing health issue which no longer constitutes a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC).
- Violence in Sudan likely to spark record levels of hunger (UN News). In an alert on the situation, the World Food Programme (WFP) said that it expected between two and 2.5 million more people to face acute hunger in the coming months, because of conflict that erupted on 15 April between forces loyal to rival Generals Abdel Fattah Al Burhan and Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo.
- Climate conditions, urbanization fueling chikungunya rise in Americas, officials say (CIDRAP) PAHO officials say they are seeing changes in the timing and magnitude of cases that are likely related to the effects of climate change and unplanned urbanization.
