This report intends to give the UTD Community a snapshot of international risks, and other issues as reported by the linked media and official sources from the U.S. and other countries.
More health and security information for each country can be found in the travel advisories issued by the governments of the United States, Canada, the UK, New Zealand, and Australia, and the CDC, ECDC, and WHO sites. Not all advise in these sites will apply to US travelers.

Security
- Niger – Non State Armed Groups attacks and intercommunity fights in Tillaberi (ERCC). According to UN OCHA, on 8 May 2023, more than 18,000 Internally Displaced People, (IDPs) arrived in the cities of Ayorou, Kandadji and Bankilare, in the Tillabéri region. The population movement follows Non State Armed Groups, (NSAG) clashes and intercommunity fights which occurred on 2 May 2023 and in the following days in proximity of the villages of Dessa, Gourouol and Ayorou.
- Fierce Battles Underway in Khartoum, Omdurman (AllAfrica.com on MSN.com). Heavy air attacks and clashes were witnessed in several major Sudanese cities, as the UN warned more people will go hungry amid a prolonged conflict.
- Israel kills another militant commander in Gaza as Cairo presses on with efforts to mediate truce (AP). Israeli airstrikes in the Gaza Strip killed a fourth militant commander on Thursday, raising the Palestinian death toll from the latest burst of fighting to 25.
Demonstrations
- At least seven people killed by police gunfire in Guinea protests (Al Jazeera English on MSN.com). An anti-government movement is planning new protests in Guinea after its leaders said at least seven people were killed and 32 wounded during demonstrations in the capital, Conakry, and other cities.
- One dead, 30 injured in new wave of unrest in Senegal (Al Jazeera English on MSN.com). Protesters have taken to the streets in capital Dakar against what they call an increasingly repressive state.
Natural Disasters
- Democratic Republic of the Congo – Landslide (ERCC). A new landslide triggered by the heavy rainfall that has been affecting the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo occurred on 10 May in Miringati village (Lubero territory, North Kivu Province) leading to casualties.
- United Kingdom – Floods and landslides (ERCC). Heavy rainfall and thunderstorms have been affecting southern and western United Kingdom (in particular southern England and Wales) since 9 May, causing floods, flash floods, rivers overflow (particularly the Cam River) and triggering landslides that have resulted in evacuations and damage.
- Japan – Earthquake (ERCC). An earthquake of 5.2 M at a depth of 36 km occurred very close to the southern coast of Chiba Prefecture on 10 May at 4.16 local time. Four people are reported injured and one house has been damaged in the Prefectures of Chiba and Kanagawa.
Migration
- Chile – Migrants stranded at the border (ERCC). Since the end of April, over 400 migrants, mainly from Venezuela but also Colombians, Ecuadorians and Haitians, have been stranded at the border between Chile and Peru, following the announcement by the Chilean authorities that undocumented migrants would be arrested and kept in pre-trial detention.
- Huge number of asylum seekers at US-Mexico border as COVID-19 restrictions end, new rules begin (AP News. The Biden administration on Thursday will begin denying asylum to migrants who arrive at the U.S.-Mexico border without first applying online or seeking protection in a country they passed through.
