This report intends to give the UTD Community a snapshot of international risks, and other issues as reported by the linked media and official sources from the U.S. and other countries.
More health and security information for each country can be found in the travel advisories issued by the governments of the United States, Canada, the UK, New Zealand, and Australia, and the CDC, ECDC, and WHO sites. Not all advise in these sites will apply to US travelers.

Security
- Russia’s war on Ukraine – Update (ERCC). Russian forces conducted another series of drone and missile strikes against Ukraine on the night of May 13 to 14, targetting civilian infrastructure in Ternopil and Mykolaiv cities as well as Kharkiv City and Zolochiv in Kharkiv Oblast.
- 17 civilians killed in southern village attack (Africanews on MSN.com). The attack on a village by armed men in southern Chad, near the border with the Central African Republic, left 17 people dead on Monday, the Gore prosecutor’s office said on Thursday.
- Haiti’s Anti-Gang Vigilantes May Pose Future Criminal Threat (Insight Crime). Anti-gang vigilantism is spreading and gaining public support amid escalating insecurity in Haiti, raising the possibility that such movements could coalesce into criminal organizations.
- Authorities gave a life sentence (SCMP) to a 78-year-old U.S. citizen who holds permanent residency in Hong Kong after convicting him of espionage.
- Israel, Gaza reach cease-fire after five days of violence (Times of Israel). The cease-fire came into effect late Saturday and has largely remained in place. A rocket was launched from the Gaza Strip toward Israel on Sunday, but both sides held fire afterward.
Natural Disasters
- Myanmar, Bangladesh, India – Tropical cyclone MOCHA – Update (ERCC). In Myanmar, five fatalities, over 700 injured people, over 100 000 evacuated people, severe damage to Rohingya Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camps and houses were reported across Sittwe area and western Rakhine. In Bangladesh, a total of 414,170 people and 23,027 livestock were evacuated in 7,040 shelters in 14 coastal districts. Significant damage to thousands of refugee shelters and key facilities in camps and host communities in Cox’s Bazar district are reported but no loss of lives. In India, the authorities report 595 evacuated people and 2 995 affected people across Mizoram.
- Pakistan – Severe weather (ERCC). Gusty winds have affected the Nowshera District in central Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province (north-western Pakistan) causing severe weather-related incidents that resulted in casualties and damage.
- Somalia – Floods, update (ERCC). Since the start of the Gu Rainy Season (from April to June), floods have impacted several parts of Somalia, particularly the Belet Weyne District in the Hirshabelle State, and Baardheere District in Jubaland State, leading to casualties and damage.
- Indonesia – Severe weather and floods (ERCC). Heavy rainfall and strong winds hit parts of Indonesia on 8-9 May, causing floods and severe weather related incidents that resulted in casualties, people displacement and damage.
- Sierra Leone – Severe weather, floods and landslides (ERCC). Heavy rainfall has affected the Freetown City area (north-western Sierra Leone) in the past few days, causing severe weather-related incidents, floods and landslides that resulted in casualties and damage.
Health
- The head of the UN World Health Organization (WHO) on Thursday declared that the multi-country outbreak of the mpox virus (UN News) which began around a year ago was no longer a public health emergency of international concern. However, he said, mpox continues to pose significant public health challenges that need a robust, proactive and sustainable response.
