Security
- Air strikes, artillery fire escalate as factions battle in Sudan capital (Reuters). Air strikes and artillery fire intensified sharply across Sudan’s capital early on Tuesday, residents said, as the army sought to defend key bases from paramilitary rivals it has been fighting for more than a month.
- Homophobic attacks in France rose almost 30 percent last year, LGBTQ group says (France 24 on MSN.com). Last year saw an increase in gay and trans people reporting physical attacks in France, an activist group said on Tuesday, warning that anti-LGBTQ sentiment remains “anchored” in society.
- Russia launched an exceptionally intense air attack on Kyiv (Reuters), using drones, cruise and probably ballistic missiles, city officials said. “It was exceptional in its density – the maximum number of attack missiles in the shortest period of time,” said Serhiy Popko, head of Kyiv’s city military administration.
- A fire at a hostel in New Zealand (Reuters) killed at least six people and officials said they believe the toll could rise with 11 people still missing. The blaze broke out on the top floor of Loafers Lodge in the Wellington neighborhood of Newtown just after midnight, police said. The hostel provided accommodation for people including construction workers, hospital staff and those serving sentences in the community for minor crimes.
Demonstrations
- Senegal sees unrest ahead of Ousmane Sonko’s rape trial (Africa News). The unrest in Ziguinchor, a town in southern Senegal, came one day before the expected start of Sonko’s rape trial in the country’s capital, Dakar.
Natural Disasters
- Myanmar, Bangladesh – Tropical cyclone MOCHA, update (ERCC). In Myanmar, media report 41 fatalities, over 700 injured and approximately 100,000 evacuated. A total of 2.2 million people are estimated to be affected by the cyclone. In Bangladesh, reports as of 15 May note around 750,000 evacuated people and 2.3 million affected people.
- Ethiopia – Floods (ERCC). Heavy rainfall continues to affect southern and north-eastern Ethiopia, in particular Somali, Oromia, Southern Nations Nationalities and Peoples (SNNP), South West, Sidama and Afar Regions, since the beginning of the Belg rainy season (from March to May), causing rivers overflow (in particular the Bilate River) and floods that have resulted in casualties and damage.
- Rwanda – Floods and landslides, update (ERCC). After the severe floods and landslides that affected northern, western and southern Provinces of Rwanda on 2-3 May, the death toll has increased and further damage has been reported.
Health
- Fungal Infections Following Surgical Procedures in Mexico (CDC). Recently, some US residents returning from Matamoros, Mexico, were diagnosed with suspected fungal meningitis infections that have led to severe illness and death.
- Sri Lanka – Epidemic (ERCC). An elevated level of dengue fever activity has been reported nationwide in Sri Lanka. About 4,000 cases were reported within the first two weeks of May, raising concerns about an epidemic situation. The Western Province is the most impacted, accounting for more than half of all cases.
- CDC warns of possible mpox resurgence (CIDRAP). Spring and summer gatherings and vaccination gaps are among the factors that could fuel another surge.
