This report intends to give the UTD Community a snapshot of international risks, and other issues as reported by the linked media and official sources from the U.S. and other countries.
More health and security information for each country can be found in the travel advisories issued by the governments of the United States, Canada, the UK, New Zealand, and Australia, and the CDC, ECDC, and WHO sites. Not all advise in these sites will apply to US travelers.

Security
- India – Violence in Manipur (ERCC). On May 28, militant groups started new violence in Manipur’s Imphal and Chandel districts, sparking clashes with the Indian army and killing five civilians, two security officers, and 40 militants. Around 30 houses were destroyed in Sanasabi, Gwaltabi, and Shabunkhol Khunao villages in Imphal District’s hilly terrain, and 6 villages were torched in Chandel District.
- Armed men kill four in attack in northern Cameroon (Reuters on MSN.com). Unidentified assailants killed two customs officers, a policeman and a civilian in an overnight attack on a security post in northern Cameroon, the mayor and two military sources said on Tuesday.
- Serbs gather again in northern Kosovo after clashes (YAHOO!News). The situation in northern Kosovo remained tense Tuesday as ethnic Serbs continued to gather in front of a town hall in Zvecan after violent clashes with NATO-led peacekeepers left 30 soldiers injured.
- Russia attacks Kyiv three times in 24 hours, reports drone strike in Moscow (The Washington Post). Moscow’s mayor said drones hit two residential buildings in the Russian capital. That report came after Russia conducted its third aerial attack on the Ukrainian capital in 24 hours.
Demonstrations
- Mexicans take to the streets to support the Supreme Court (Mexico News Daily). Thousands of people took to the streets of cities across Mexico on Sunday to demonstrate their support for the Supreme Court (SCJN) as it comes under repeated verbal attack by President López Obrador.
Road safety
A bus carrying Hindu pilgrims to a shrine in Indian-controlled Kashmir skidded off a highway bridge into a Himalayan gorge Tuesday, killing at least 10 people and injuring 55, police said.
Natural Disasters
- Pakistan – Snow avalanche (ERCC). On 27 May, an avalanche occurred in a mountainous pass that connects the Astore district of the Gilgit-Baltistan region to the bordering Kashmir valley (northern Pakistan). According to media reports, at least 11 people died, and 25 others have been injured following the event.
- Philippines, Taiwan, Japan – Tropical Cyclone MAWAR, update (ERCC). On 29 May, tropical cyclone MAWAR continued north-west over the northern Philippine Sea, weakening. Philippines reports, as of 30 May, 3,864 evacuated people. Guam, recorded, as of 29 May, 760 still evacuated people in four shelters.
- Canada – Wildfires (ERCC). Wildfires have been affecting the Province of Nova Scotia in eastern Canada, resulting in evacuations and damage.
- Algeria – Floods (ERCC). Since 24 May, heavy rainfall as been hitting nine Provinces of Algeria (Algiers, Blida, Tébessa, Oum El Bouaghi, Tipaza, Boumerdes, El Tarf, Batna and Guelma) causing floods and resulting in casualties and damage.
- Italy – Severe weather, floods and landslides, update (ERCC). According to the Italian Civil Protection, as of 27 May, 20,500 people has been displaced, out of which 1,554 individuals are being accommodated in hotels and facilities established by the municipalities. 12 nationwide roads are still affected, some of them in multiple sections.
- Bangladesh – Severe weather (ERCC). A sequence of lightning strikes and thunderstorms affected several Districts of Bangladesh on 23-24 May causing a number of severe weather-related incidents, particularly due to lightning that have resulted in casualties.
Health
- Hunger is set to worsen in 18 “hotspots” worldwide including Sudan (UN News), where fighting is putting people at risk of starvation, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Food Programme (WFP) warned in a report published on Monday. Sudan, Burkina Faso, Haiti and Mali have been elevated to the highest alert level, joining Afghanistan, Nigeria, Somalia, South Sudan and Yemen. Additionally, a likely El Niño – a naturally occurring climatic phenomenon that has a warming effect on ocean surface temperatures in the central and east Pacific – is also raising fears of climate extremes in vulnerable nations.
