This report intends to give the UTD Community a snapshot of international risks, and other issues as reported by the linked media and official sources from the U.S. and other countries.
More health and security information for each country can be found in the travel advisories issued by the governments of the United States, Canada, the UK, New Zealand, and Australia, and the CDC, ECDC, and WHO sites. Not all advise in these sites will apply to US travelers.

Security
- South Sudan – Intercommunal violence (ERCC). On 8 June, the stabbing to death of a 14-year-old Shilluk boy caused an eruption of inter-communal violence in Malakal Protection of Civilian (PoC) site, South Sudan, leading to 13 people dead and 20 injured. Vulnerable people were fleeing the PoC seeking for safety and are residing at the gates of UNMISS compound and of the humanitarian hub.
- Sudan crisis still having devastating impact on civilians (UN News). Hundreds have been killed and some 1.2 million have been displaced. UN agencies and partners have repeatedly warned of the growing humanitarian crisis, including sexual violence, online hate, and refugee and orphan deaths.
- Six civilians killed in extremist attack on Mogadishu beachside hotel (Africanews on MSN.com). Six civilians were killed and 10 wounded in a six-hour siege by Islamist Al-Shabaab militants at a beachside hotel in Somalia’s capital Mogadishu, police said Saturday.
Demonstrations
- Rohingya protest in Bangladesh, demand repatriation to Myanmar (Reuters on MSN.com). Tens of thousands of Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh protested on Thursday, demanding to be repatriated to Myanmar, so that they could leave the squalid camps they have lived in since fleeing a brutal military crackdown in their homeland in 2017.
- ‘Your car will be confiscated’: Iran women defy hijab law despite threats (BBC). Women in Iran are defying fresh attempts by authorities to use technology to enforce the compulsory dress code that has been a focus of continuing protests across the country.
Infrastructure
- The humanitarian situation following the destruction of the Kakhovka dam in Ukraine is still a “moving target” (UN News), immediate needs are “huge” including waterborne diseases, heavy oils and pesticides mixing with water and creating additional health hazards, and landmines floating downstream with the floodwaters. While the immediate impact of the dam’s destruction is staggering, there is also the destruction of homes, farmland and livestock, the impact on water and energy supplies and the serious risk of environmental contamination.
- Germany Warns of Industry Shutdown If Russian Gas Stops Flowing (YAHOO!News). Germany may be forced to wind down or even switch off industrial capacity if Ukraine’s gas transit agreement with Russia isn’t extended after it expires at the end of next year, according to Economy Minister Robert Habeck.
Natural Disasters
- Indonesia – Severe weather (ERCC). Heavy rainfall, strong winds and thunderstorms have been affecting northern Indonesia, in particular the Sumatra Island since 9 June, causing a number of strong wind-related incidents that have resulted in casualties and damage.
- Iran – Floods (ERCC). Heavy rainfall has been affecting central and northern Iran over the past few days, causing floods and flash floods that have resulted in casualties and damage. A total of 13 provinces were affected, where the worst affected ones are: Isfahan, Tehran, Semnan, Zanjan, Qazvin, Markazi, and East Azerbaijan.
- Pakistan – Floods (ERCC). Heavy rainfall, strong winds and thunderstorms have been affecting north-western Pakistan, in particular the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province since 10 June, causing floods, flash floods and a number of severe weather-related incidents, particularly due to the strong wind, that have resulted in casualties and damage.
- Somalia – Floods, update (ERCC). Since the start of the Gu Rainy Season (from mid-March), several parts of the country have been experiencing heavy rainfall and consequent floods that resulted in an increasing number of displacements.
