This report intends to give the UTD Community a snapshot of international risks, and other issues as reported by the linked media and official sources from the U.S. and other countries.
More health and security information for each country can be found in the travel advisories issued by the governments of the United States, Canada, the UK, New Zealand, and Australia, and the CDC, ECDC, and WHO sites. Not all advise in these sites will apply to US travelers.

Security
- The explosion of ethnic violence in Darfur (UN News) largely by nomadic “Arab” groups in alliance with the RSF who have been battling national army forces for control of the country since mid-April, has led tens of thousands to flee into neighboring Chad.
- A particularly deadly week of violence in the Occupied Palestinian Territory’s West Bank risks spiralling out of control (UN News), UN human rights chief Volker Türk said on Friday, after a “major intensification” involving Israeli airstrikes and drone attacks.
- Curfews imposed after more than 20 killed in north Honduras (Reuters). The Honduran government announced curfews on Sunday in two northern cities after more than 20 people were killed overnight in separate attacks amid escalating violence in the country.
- Nigerian Police Warn of Possible Terror Attacks During Eid Celebrations (Voice of America). Nigeria’s state security service has warned the public of possible terrorist attacks on houses of worship ahead of the June 29 Islamic celebration of Eid-al-Adha, the Feast of Sacrifice.
- Honduras hands prison control to military police, expands emergency powers after deadly riot (Reuters). Honduras will return control of most of the country’s penal system to the military police for the next year, the Central American country’s presidential office said late on Wednesday, a day after a prison riot claimed nearly 50 lives.
Infrastructure
- Mexico’s heat wave strains energy grid with record demand (Reuters). Soaring temperatures in Mexico are driving record electricity consumption that has prompted the country’s energy authority to issue a rare alert over grid capacity, as the government played down reports of blackouts.
- People with disabilities in Spain and other European countries have been disproportionately affected by unprecedented heat extremes (Reuters), a leading human rights watchdog said, urging authorities to provide adequate support. Jonas Bull, assistant disability rights researcher at HRW, told Reuters that inaccessible urban spaces exacerbated the problem.
Events
- Massive crowds circle Kaaba as hajj begins in Saudi heat (Yahoo News). Vast crowds of robed Muslim faithful walked solemn circles around the Kaaba, the black cube at Mecca’s Grand Mosque on Sunday to begin the biggest hajj pilgrimage in several years, in the heat of the Saudi summer. The event is expecting to host more than two million worshippers from 160 countries during the annual rites that could break attendance records, with 1.6 million foreigners already arrived by late Friday.
Natural Disasters
- Kosovo – Flash floods (ERCC). Heavy rainfall has been affecting western Kosovo, in particular the Rugova Region since 24 June, causing floods and flash floods that have resulted in casualties and damage.
- Chile – Floods (ERCC). Heavy rainfall has been affecting central-southern Chile, particularly Valparaíso, Santiago Metropolitan, O’Higgins, Maule, Ñuble, Biobío and Araucanía Regions since 23 June, causing floods and resulting in casualties and damage.
- Ghana – Floods (ERCC). Heavy rainfall has been affecting southern Ghana, in particular Western, Ashanti and Greater Accra Regions since 21 June, causing floods and rivers overflow that have resulted in casualties and damage.
- Philippines – Severe weather (ERCC). Heavy rainfall, strong winds and thunderstorms have been affecting northern Philippines, in particular the Central Luzon Region over the period from 22 to 23 June, causing some strong wind-related incidents that have resulted in casualties and damage.
- Indonesia – Severe weather (ERCC). Heavy rainfall, strong winds and thunderstorms have been affecting northern Indonesia, in particular the Riau Islands, between Sumatra, the Malay Peninsula and the Borneo Island since 24 June, causing a number of strong wind-related incidents that have resulted in casualties and damage
- India – Floods in State Assam, update (ERCC). Heavy rains over the past two days have worsened the ongoing flood situation in India’s Assam State. According to the latest Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) report, nearly half a million people are affected across 22 of the state’s 31 districts.
Health
- One fatal case of swine influenza A(H1N1) variant virus (A(H1N1)v) has been reported in Brazil (ECDC). To date, no human-to-human transmission has been reported for this virus. The risk for the general population is considered low.
Humanitarian
- Horn of Africa: Around 60 million in urgent humanitarian need (UN News). Climate, armed conflict, high food prices and post-COVID-19 economic fall-out have caused record food insecurity in the Horn of Africa, with an estimated 60 million urgently in need of help, UN humanitarian agencies warned on Monday.
- Number of internally displaced people in DRC doubles to more than 6 million – UN (News24). Six million of those are in Mai-Ndombe, Kasai, Tshopo, Ituri, North Kivu and South Kivu – six provinces faced with a devastating combination of conflict, measles and cholera.
