Infrastructure
- Russian drones hit oil refinery, damage railway power lines – Ukraine (Reuters on MSN.com). An overnight Russian drone attack hit and set ablaze the Kremenchuk oil refinery in central Ukraine on Wednesday and falling debris from drones that were shot down damaged railway power lines in a nearby region, officials said.
- Israel deploys missile boats in Red Sea as Houthis attack from Yemen (Reuters). The Israeli military said it had deployed missile boats in the Red Sea on Wednesday as reinforcements, a day after the Iran-aligned Houthi movement said it had launched missile and drone attacks on Israel and vowed to carry out more.
- Panama canal will slash ship crossings again due to drought (CNBC). Daily ship crossings, normally an average crossing of thirty-six ships, on the Panama Canal one of the world’s main maritime trade routes, will be further reduced over the coming months due to a severe drought, the authorities managing the canal said late on Monday. Booking slots will be cut to 25 per day between November 3 to November 6, the Panama Canal Authority (ACP) said in a shipping advisory, and will be gradually reduced further over the coming months to 18 per day beginning February 1, 2024.
Environment
- Residents in Australian state urged to flee as wildfires blaze (Reuters). Residents in three areas in Australia’s northern Queensland state were ordered to evacuate their homes on Wednesday, as bushfires burned out of control.
- Haze lingers in Beijing as fog blankets parts of north China (Yahoo News). Hazy weather hung over Beijing on Wednesday with conditions in other parts of north China possibly worsening, forecasters said, although cold air sweeping in from the northwest is expected to help dissipate the smog.
- France issues alerts for strong winds, possible flooding from approach of Storm Ciaran (France 24 on MSN.com). France has placed three departments in western France on red alert as Storm Ciaran is expected to hit the country’s northwest on Wednesday evening and warned residents in the departments concerned.
Migration and Displacement
- Afghans make up majority of 140,000 leaving Pakistan as deadline set to expire (Reuters on MSN.com). Afghans returning to their Taliban-ruled homeland form the bulk of the 140,000 undocumented immigrants to have left Pakistan, officials said on Wednesday, hours before the expiry of a deadline to leave or face expulsion. Pakistan has said it will begin on Thursday an effort to round up and expel any such individuals after setting the deadline in October to begin expelling all undocumented immigrants, including hundreds of thousands of Afghans.
- Hundreds more join Mexico migrant caravan headed for US, organizer says (Reuters). Hundreds more people have joined a caravan of thousands of migrants in Mexico bound for the United States, one of the organizers said on Tuesday, as the group traveled through the southern state of Chiapas.
