This report intends to give the UTD Community a snapshot of international risks, and other issues as reported by the linked media and official sources from the U.S. and other countries.

More health and security information for each country can be found in the travel advisories issued by the governments of the United States, Canada, the UK, New Zealand, and Australia, and the CDC, ECDC, and WHO sites. Not all advise in these sites will apply to US travelers.

Environment

  • Iceland – Volcanic unrest, update (ERCC). On 20 November, over 700 earthquakes were detected in the region of the magma intrusion in the Reykjanes Peninsula (south-western Iceland). The highest earthquake of 2.7 M was recorded near Hagafell. In recent days, between 1,500 and 1,800 daily earthquakes have been registered in the area. Crustal uplift in the Svartsengi Region, due to the magma intrusion is still ongoing
  • Bolivia – Wildfires, update (ERCC). As of 21 November, the wildfires in Bolivia have already burnt approximately 180,000 ha, according to the JRC Global Wildfire Information System (GWIS). The most affected areas are Beni, La Paz and Santa Cruz Departments, in northern and central Bolivia.Suárez, Carmen Rivero Torrez, San José de Chiquitos and Urubicha.
  • Papua New Guinea – Ulawun volcano eruption (ERCC). On 20 November around 5.30 UTC (16.30 local time) the Ulawun volcano, located in the northern New Britain Island in eastern Papua New Guinea, approximately 125 km south-west of Rabaul Town, started to erupt. Media report, as of 21 November, a number of preventively evacuated people across the area nearby the volcano and some canceled flights from the Hoskins Town airport. On 20 November the aviation colour code has been raised to red from the Darwin Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre (VAAC).
  • Türkiye – Severe weather (ERCC). Since 18 November, heavy rain and strong winds have been affecting Türkiye, causing floods and severe weather-related incidents that resulted in casualties and damage.
  • Horn of Africa – Floods (ERCC). Heavy rainfall continues to affect the Horn of Africa region – Somalia, Kenya and Ethiopia – since the beginning of the Deyr rainy season that lasts from early October to December, aggravated by the El Niño effect, causing the overflow of rivers, floods, flash floods and triggering landslides resulting in casualties and widespread damage.

Health

  • Zimbabwe – Cholera outbreak (ERCC). As of 20 November, a cumulative total of 8,230 suspected cholera cases, 1,301 laboratory confirmed cases (9,531 total cases) and 209 deaths have been reported in Zimbabwe by the Ministry of Health and Child Care. The number of cases reported weekly continues to grow at an alarming pace with more than 650 suspected cases reported in the last week, which is likely to cause cross-border transmissions.
