World Status Report

This report intends to give the UTD Community a snapshot of international risks, and other issues as reported by the linked media and official sources from the U.S. and other countries.
More health and security information for each country can be found in the travel advisories issued by the governments of the United States, Canada, the UK, New Zealand, and Australia, and the CDC, ECDC, and WHO sites. Not all advise in these sites will apply to US travelers.

Security
- Cameroon – Attack in the West Region (ERCC). On 21 November, armed individuals raided the Bameyam market in Galim, located in the Bamboutos division of the West Region. The attack resulted in the death of at least 9 civilians, and two defense and security agents were reportedly wounded during the incident.
- Ukraine war: Kyiv hit by biggest drone attack since war began (BBC). Russia has launched its biggest drone attack on Kyiv since its full-scale invasion of Ukraine began last year, the city’s mayor has said.
- Israel-Hamas war live: Israel says Hamas given option to extend truce (Al Jazeera). Israel says it is open to extend truce in Gaza if more captives are released by Hamas. Egypt, Qatar and the United States are pressing for extension of the four-day truce that ended on Monday.
- Sierra Leone: President declares calm after day of clashes (Africa News). Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio announced on Sunday evening that calm has been restored after a day of armed clashes in Freetown. The day saw unknown assailants attempting to force their way into a military arsenal in Freetown, confronting security forces in various parts of the capital, and freeing numerous prisoners from jail. A curfew was imposed nationwide until further notice.
- The body of an abducted anti-mining activist is found in western Mexico (AP News). Authorities in western Mexico said Sunday they have found the body of anti-mining activist Higinio Trinidad de la Cruz. De la Cruz had opposed both illegal logging and iron ore mining that have altered the environment of the rural community.
Demonstrations
- Italy rallies to condemn violence against women draw huge crowds (BBC). Tens of thousands of people have taken part in protests across Italy, calling for an end violence against women following the murder of a university student earlier this month.
- Large-scale arrests expected for suspected ringleaders of Dublin riot (The Guardian). Irish police are expected to make sweeping arrests of suspected ringleaders of Thursday’s riot in Dublin and to obtain wider rights to use facial recognition technology to help identify suspects in any future disorder.
Infrastructure
- Kashmir hit by 16-hour outages a day as temperature dips below 0 (Times of India). Kashmir is reeling under acute power shortage, with people facing extreme inconvenience due to daily outages up to 16 hours at a time when temperatures in the Valley have dipped to sub-zero levels.
- Snowstorm causes massive power cuts across Ukraine (BBC News). Snowstorms and strong winds have left more than 2,000 towns and villages without power across many regions of Ukraine, local officials say.
Environment
- Indonesia – Severe weather (ERCC). Heavy rainfall and strong winds have been affecting central Indonesia, in particular the Java Island and Kalimantan, the Indonesia part of the Borneo Island, since 24 November, causing floods, rivers overflow and a number of strong wind-related incidents that have resulted in casualties and damage.
- Philippines – Severe weather, floods and landslides, update (ERCC). The Low-Pressure Area (LPA) in combination with the Shear Line has been affecting at least seven Regions in the Philippines causing floods, triggering landslides and resulting in casualties and widespread damage. A total of 81,419 people are displaced, and more than 1,100,000 others have been affected most of them in Eastern Visayas, Western Visayas and Bicol Regions.
- Kenya – Floods, update (ERCC). Heavy rainfall continues to affect most of Kenya and the wider Horn of Africa region, causing rivers to overflow, floods, flash floods and triggering landslides that have resulted in more casualties and widespread damage. Over 45,000 displaced and a total of nearly 95,800 affected families throughout Kenya.
- Romania, Bulgaria – Severe weather (ERCC). Heavy snowfall, strong winds and blizzards have affected several parts of Romania and Bulgaria causing severe weather-related incidents and damage.
- Sri Lanka – Severe weather, floods and landslides, update (ERCC). The number of casualties is increasing following heavy rainfall and strong winds that caused floods, landslides and severe weather-related incidents across most parts of the country.
- Tanzania – Floods, update (ERCC). Heavy rainfall has been affecting northern, western and eastern Tanzania since mid-October due to the so-termed short rainy season that lasts from October to December causing floods, flash floods, rivers overflow and triggering landslides that have resulted in more casualties and widespread damage. A total of nearly 10,100 affected people were reported.
- Philippines – Severe weather, floods and landslides, update (ERCC). On 17-23 November, a Low-Pressure Area (LPA) in combination with the Shear Line affected the central Regions of the Philippines, causing floods, triggering landslides and resulting in casualties and widespread damage. Almost 74,300 people have been displaced, more than 879,00 others were affected.
- USA – Landslide (ERCC). On 21 November, a landslide triggered by heavy rainfall occurred in Wrangell Town in northwest Wrangell Island, south-eastern Alaska, 250 km south of the Capital Juneau, resulting in casualties and damage.
- Bolivia – Wildfires, update (ERCC). The wildfires are still affecting several parts of Bolivia. According to COGIC the burnt area is approximately 180,000 ha and Chiquitania, Béni and northern La Paz are the most affected areas.
- Australia – Wildfires (ERCC). Multiple bushfires have been burning close to the Perth City area , Western Australia State, resulting in mandatory evacuations and damage. The Global Wildfire Information System (GWIS) recorded, as of 22 November, a burnt area of about 1,000 ha wide.
Humanitarian
- Humanitarian crisis worsening in eastern DRC – UN (Africa News). The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) and the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) express grave concern over the humanitarian crisis unfolding in the east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
