World Status Report

This report intends to give the UTD Community a snapshot of international risks, and other issues as reported by the linked media and official sources from the U.S. and other countries. 

More health and security information for each country can be found in the travel advisories issued by the governments of the United States, Canada, the UK, New Zealand, and Australia, and the CDC, ECDC, and WHO sites. Not all advise in these sites will apply to US travelers.

Environment 

  • Cameroon – Floods (ERCC) Heavy rainfall in Cameroon continue and are affecting more localities in the Far North region, causing extensive damage. At least 158,620 people have been affected now, 8,690 houses collapsed, and 3,000 ha of crops have been destroyed. The consequences of these floods are particularly severe in a region heavily impacted by conflicts, which hosts 453,000 IDPs and 128,000 refugees. 
  • India – Floods in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana (ERCC) Heavy rainfall has impacted ten districts in Andhra Pradesh, with four districts – NTR, Krishna, Guntur, and Bapatla – being severely affected. In Telangana, five districts have also been affected. According to the National Disaster Management Institute (NDMI) India, 644,536 people have been affected in Andhra Pradesh, while 200,000 people have been impacted in Telangana. The death toll stands at 32 in Andhra Pradesh and 23 in Telangana. 
  • Philippines, China – Tropical cyclone YAGI, update (ERCC) On 5 September at 0.00 UTC its centre was located offshore approximately 545 km east of the Qiongzhou strait, southern China, with maximum sustained winds of 241 km/h (typhoon). Its passage over the Visayas and Luzon islands caused heavy rainfall, floods and landslides that resulted in casualties and damage. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reports, as of 5 September, 13 fatalities, 15 persons still missing, 11 injured people, over 51,000 evacuated people.  
  • Spain – Severe weather (ERCC) Heavy rainfall, strong winds and thunderstorms have been affecting eastern Spain, particularly the Aragon, Albacete, Murcia regions and the Balearic Islands, in the last few days since 2 September, causing floods and severe weather-related incidents that have resulted in casualties and damage. According to media reports, as of 5 September, one person died, one is still missing, and 12 have been evacuated due to the flooding of the Pareis torrent in Escorca municipality, in the northern Mallorca Island (Balearic Islands). 

Health 

  • We must do more to keep the air we breathe clean (UN News) Unchecked climate change, wildfires and air pollution continue to have “a spiraling, negative impact on health, ecosystems and agriculture”, with millions of deaths attributed to dirty air, the UN World Meteorological Organization (WMO) said on Thursday. 
  • Global cholera deaths rise sharply (CIDRAP). Cholera deaths rose sharply last year, with multiple countries reporting deaths in the community, which highlight serious gaps in treatment, the World Health Organization (WHO) said in an overview of activity in 2023.
