This report intends to give the UTD Community a snapshot of international risks, and other issues as reported by the linked media and official sources from the U.S. and other countries.

Security
- Ukraine targets Moscow in biggest drone attack (Reuters) – Ukraine targeted the Russian capital on Tuesday in its biggest drone attack so far, killing at least one and wrecking dozens of homes in the Moscow region and forcing around 50 flights to be diverted from airports around Moscow.
- Germany tightens controls at all borders in immigration crackdown (Reuters) – Germany’s government announced plans to impose tighter controls at all of the country’s land borders in what it called an attempt to tackle irregular migration and protect the public from threats such as Islamist extremism.
- Dozens killed, wounded in Israeli strikes on Gaza tent camp (Reuters) – Israeli strikes blasted a huge crater in a designated safe zone in southern Gaza before dawn on Tuesday, setting tents ablaze and burying Palestinian families under sand.
- Widespread abuses in Myanmar conflict (UN News) – Warfare in Myanmar has escalated into systematic atrocities, including attacks targeting civilians, torture and sexual violence, the UN independent rights probe into the country said on Monday.
- RSF paramilitaries kill 31 in Sudanese city of Sennar, activists say (Reuters) – At least 31 people have been killed and 100 wounded since the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces renewed an assault on the city of Sennar in southeastern Sudan on Sunday, a legal activist group said.
- Italy faces calls for hospital security crackdown after assaults on doctors (Reuters) – Italy’s government faced calls on Tuesday from health workers to send the army to protect public hospitals, after a string of assaults against doctors and nurses who say they are not only overworked and underpaid, but also physically endangered.
Road Safety
- More than 50 killed in Nigeria fuel tanker crash (BBC) Fifty-nine people have been confirmed dead in central Nigeria’s Niger state, after a fuel tanker collided with a lorry carrying passengers and cattle, the state emergency agency said.
Environment
- Uganda – Floods (ERCC) – As of 9 September, two fatalities, 1,469 households affected in 13 villages and more than 120 homes have been damaged or destroyed, leaving hundreds of families without shelter
- Morocco, Algeria – Floods, update (ERCC) – As of 10 September, 18 fatalities and four still missing persons across the the aforementioned affected provinces. In addition, media also reports 56 destroyed houses and 110 damaged roads throughout the affected area. Moreover, in Algeria, five fatalities were reported across the Béchar province, western Algeria, bordering with eastern Morocco.
Health
- Mpox escalates in Africa as officials launch response plan (CIDRAP). In Burundi’s worsening outbreak, kids younger than 15 are the most affected group, similar to the DRC.

- How is the world coping up with Monkey Pox Virus? (ECDC) – Since the beginning of mpox monitoring in 2022, and as of 31 July 2024, over 100 000 confirmed cases of mpox due to monkeypox virus (MPXV) clade I and clade II, including over 200 deaths among confirmed cases, have been reported by more than 120 countries globally according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
- COVID more severe, longer-lasting than other respiratory diseases (CIDRAP) – Healthcare workers (HCWs) with COVID-19 had more severe symptoms that lasted longer than those with other respiratory diseases, and a higher proportion met the World Health Organization (WHO) or UK National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) definitions of long COVID, according to a report published in Viruses and Viral Diseases.
Humanitarian
- Gaza war continues to shut hundreds of thousands out of class (UN News) – Monday would have marked the start of the new school year in Gaza.Almost 625,000 children in the enclave have already lost an entire school year following the 7 October 2023 terror attacks by Hamas and other Palestinian armed groups on communities in southern Israel and the ensuing Israeli military operation in Gaza.They are now joined by more than 45,000 six-year-old children poised to enter first grade, elevating the risk of a second year without any classroom education.
- Use of cluster bombs threatens global ban (UN News) – Cluster bomblets continue to kill thousands of civilians, mostly children, and the new use of this predominantly outlawed class of weapons is threatening efforts to universally ban them, according to a new report published on Monday.
