World Status Report

September 13, 2024

This report intends to give the UTD Community a snapshot of international risks, and other issues as reported by the linked media and official sources from the U.S. and other countries.

More health and security information for each country can be found in the travel advisories issued by the governments of the United States, Canada, the UK, New Zealand, and Australia, and the CDC, ECDC, and WHO sites. Not all advise in these sites will apply to US travelers.

Security

Travel

  • Germany to Introduce Border Controls at All Land Borders on September 16 (Schengen News) – By introducing border controls, Germany wants to protect national security as well as curb the number of foreigners attempting to enter the country without valid visas and irregular migration in general. Once the checks enter into force, controls will apply to the land borders with Austria, Belgium, Czechia, France, Denmark, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Poland, and Switzerland. Germany has been maintaining border controls with Austria, Czechia, Poland and Switzerland for some time now.

Environment

  • Philippines, Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, Myanmar – Tropical cyclone YAGI update (ERCC) – Heavy rains from typhoon Yagi’s remnants have impacted the Philippines, Viet Nam, Northern Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar. Millions are affected in all five countries.
  • Cameroon – Floods (ERCC)  – Heavy rainfall has been affecting the Far North region of Cameroon, bordering with Chad and Nigeria since mid-August, causing widespread floods that resulted in casualties and severe damage. Over the next 96 hours, heavy rainfall is still forecast over most of the country.

South Sudan – Floods, update (ERCC) – Heavy rainfall has been affecting South Sudan since May, causing floods that have resulted in displacements and damage.

Health

  • Niger – Cholera outbreak (ERCC)  – On 10 September, the Ministry of Health announced suspected cholera cases in three health districts of Tahoua region, southern Niger. There are 172 suspected cases registered, with six fatalities reported so far. This outbreak is taking place in a context of large floodings that have affected more than 841,641 people in the country to date.
  • Stay Up to Date with Your COVID-19 Vaccines (CDC) – Everyone ages 6 months and older should get a 2024–2025 COVID-19 vaccine. The COVID-19 vaccine helps protect you from severe disease, hospitalization, and death. Getting a COVID-19 vaccine is a safer, more reliable way to build protection than getting sick with COVID-19. Getting the 2024–2025 COVID-19 vaccine is important as protection from the COVID-19 vaccine decreases with time. COVID-19 vaccines are updated to give you the best protection from the currently circulating strains. Getting the 2024–2025 COVID-19 vaccine is especially important if you never received a COVID-19 vaccine.
  • It’s time for Seasonal Flu Vaccines (CDC) – Flu vaccine prevents millions of illnesses and flu-related doctor’s visits each year. For example, during  2019-2020, the last flu season prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, flu vaccination prevented an estimated 7 million influenza illnesses, 3 million influenza-associated medical visits, 100,000 influenza-associated hospitalizations, and 7,000 influenza-associated deaths.
