World Status Report

This report intends to give the UTD Community a snapshot of international risks, and other issues as reported by the linked media and official sources from the U.S. and other countries. 

More health and security information for each country can be found in the travel advisories issued by the governments of the United States, Canada, the UK, New Zealand, and Australia, and the CDC, ECDC, and WHO sites. Not all advise in these sites will apply to US travelers. 

Security 

  • Russian bomb strikes Kharkiv apartment building, one dead, 42 injured (Reuters) – A Russian-guided bomb struck a multi-storey apartment building on Sunday in Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, triggering a fire and killing one person and injuring 42, officials said. 
  • At least 20 dead in violence near Papua New Guinea gold mine (Reuters) – Violent attacks near Barrick Gold’s, opens new tab Porgera gold mine in Papua New Guinea (PNG) has likely killed at least 20 people and forced women and children to flee the region, local media reported. Papua New Guinea has granted police emergency powers, including the use of lethal force, to contain the violence in Porgera between illegal settlers squatting near the gold mine and local landowners, newspapers Post-Courier and The National reported late on Sunday. 
  • Houthi missile reaches central Israel for first time, no injuries reported (Reuters) – Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel would inflict a “heavy price” on the Iran-aligned Houthis who control northern Yemen, after they reached central Israel with a missile on Sunday for the first time. Houthi military spokesman Yahya Sarea said the group struck with a new hypersonic ballistic missile that travelled 2,040 km (1270 miles) in just 11 1/2 minutes. 
  • First Conviction Under New Hong Kong Security Law Goes to Man With ‘Seditious’ T-Shirt (Bloomberg). The twenty-seven-year-old pleaded guilty to sedition today after he was arrested in June for wearing a T-shirt and a mask with protest slogans including from 2019 antigovernment demonstrations. He’ll face sentencing on Thursday, which could be unforgiving under a new national security law passed in March: the penalty for such a first-time offense rose from two years to as much as a decade.

  • Germany Begins Controls at All Land Borders Today (Schengen News) – From September 16, Germany has implemented controls at all country’s borders. The decision comes to combat irregular migration, with the measures set to remain effective for six months. Germany’s decision to introduce border controls has sparked controversies among EU countries.

Health 

  • WHO approves first mpox vaccine to boost access in Africa (UN News) – The World Health Organization (WHO) has approved the use of an mpox vaccine for the first time, which it says should facilitate “timely and increased access” for millions at risk in Africa where the latest outbreak has infected more than 20,000 so far this year.  
  • MPOX Vaccination Strategies (CDC) – Recommends that people with risk factors who have not previously had mpox to get both recommended doses and to continue to reduce their risk of getting mpox whether or not they’ve been fully vaccinated. 
  • One dead from Nipah virus in India’s Kerala; second death this year (Reuters) – A 24-year-old student has died from the Nipah virus in the southern Indian state of Kerala, a local medical official said on Monday, and 151 people who came into contact with the victim are under observation to prevent the spread of the deadly virus.
