World Status Report

This report intends to give the UTD Community a snapshot of international risks, and other issues as reported by the linked media and official sources from the U.S. and other countries. 

More health and security information for each country can be found in the travel advisories issued by the governments of the United States, Canada, the UK, New Zealand, and Australia, and the CDC, ECDC, and WHO sites. Not all advise in these sites will apply to US travelers.

Security 

• Lebanon says 182 killed in deadliest day of Israel-Hezbollah conflict in past year (BBC News) – Lebanon’s health ministry says at least 182 people have been killed and more than 700 wounded in Israeli strikes today – the deadliest day of Israel-Hezbollah conflict in the past year 
• Lebanon – Level 4: Do Not Travel (DOS) – Due to the unpredictable nature of ongoing conflict between Hizballah and Israel and recent explosions throughout Lebanon, including Beirut, the U.S. Embassy urges U.S. citizens to depart Lebanon while commercial options still remain available. At this time, commercial flights are available, but at reduced capacity. If the security situation worsens, commercial options to depart may become unavailable.  
• Dramatic uptick in violence in Gaza, Israel and Lebanon (UN News) – Tensions continued to ratchet up in the Middle East on Monday with reports of hundreds of retaliatory Israeli strikes on Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon and strikes in Gaza including on a refugee camp. The armed group reportedly launched some 150 projectiles into northern Israel over the weekend, the latest in a series of Hezbollah attacks that began shortly after war erupted in Gaza, and which have uprooted around 60,000 Israelis to date. In southern Lebanon, some 30,000 people have been displaced from their homes. 
• UN chief alarmed at full-scale assault on El Fasher (UN News) – UN Secretary-General is gravely alarmed by reports of a full-scale assault on El Fasher by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Sudan, his Spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric said on Saturday. The parties to the conflict have clear obligations under international humanitarian law to protect civilians, and attacks must not be directed against them or civilian infrastructure and constant care must be taken to spare them 

Demonstrations 

• Long-forbidden French anti-riot force sent to Martinique as thousands defy bans on protests (AP News) –  France has sent a group of special anti-riot police that’s been banned for 65 years to the French Caribbean island of Martinique, where protesters have gathered despite the government barring demonstrations in parts of the island. 
• Tanzania opposition leaders detained amid protest ban (BBC News) – Two leaders of Tanzania’s main opposition Chadema party are among 14 members who have been arrested, as police attempted to block a banned demonstration in the main city, Dar es Salaam.  

Environment 

• Viet Nam, Myanmar, Lao PDR, Thailand – Tropical depression SOULIK, update (ERCC) – The flooding in Myanmar has had a significant impact, touching the lives of nearly 890,000 people across 65 townships. The flooding has resulted in over 300 deaths and close to 100 injuries. As of 23 September, one injured person, more than 2,300 evacuated families and over 90 damaged houses across the Quang Binh province, Vietnam. 
• China, South Korea, Japan – Tropical storm PULASAN, update (ERCC) – As of 23 September, six fatalities and ten persons still missing across the Ishikawa and Niigata prefectures. In southern South Korea approximately 500 evacuated people were reported in the North Gyeongsang Province. Moreover, in eastern China, media also report around 112,000 avacuated people across the greater Shangai area. 
• Pakistan – Floods (ERCC) – Reports from national, provincial, and district disaster management authorities indicate that 368 people have lost their lives, over 700 have been injured, and 551,068 individuals have been affected—168,041 in Balochistan, 340,041 in Sindh, 40,347 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), and 10,146 in Punjab. More than 78,608 homes have been fully or partially damaged, along with over 500 km of roads and 40 bridges. In Sindh 143,255 people have been displaced. 
• Argentina – Wildfires (ERCC) – There are three active fires located in Villa Berna, Salsacate and Capilla del Monte, and 12,000 ha have burnt so far over the hit province. Report states at least 150 evacuated people and 20 burned houses across the interested areas. The authorities declared a state of environmental alert due to the ongoing wildfires. 
• Rescue workers search for at least 6 people missing after heavy rain pounds Japan’s Noto region (AP News) –  Rescue workers searched for at least six people missing Sunday after heavy rain pounded Japan’s northcentral region of Noto, triggering landslides and floods and leaving one person dead in a region still recovering from a deadly Jan. 1 earthquake. 

Health 

• UNICEF issues $58.8 million appeal to halt mpox outbreak in Africa (UN News) – To date in Burundi there have been more than 14,000 suspected cases but no reported deaths from mpox. Neighbouring Democratic Republic of the Congo, however, has seen nearly 21,900 suspected cases and 717 deaths.
