World Status Report

This report intends to give the UTD Community a snapshot of international risks, and other issues as reported by the linked media and official sources from the U.S. and other countries. 

More health and security information for each country can be found in the travel advisories issued by the governments of the United States, Canada, the UK, New Zealand, and Australia, and the CDC, ECDC, and WHO sites. Not all advise in these sites will apply to US travelers.

Security 

  • Venezuela – Level 4: Do Not Travel (DOS) – Emphasized the danger to U.S. citizens living in or traveling to Venezuela. Do not travel to Venezuela due to the high risk of wrongful detentions, terrorism, kidnapping, the arbitrary enforcement of local laws, crime, civil unrest, poor health infrastructure.  
  • Ukraine says it downed 28 drones, four missiles during Russian overnight attack (Reuters) –   The Ukrainian air force said on Wednesday it shot down 28 out of 32 drones and four out of eight missiles during an overnight Russian attack. The air force said Russia launched four missiles at the southern region of Odesa. Its regional governor, Oleh Kiper, said a missile hit an open area and caused a fire which had since been put out. The debris also damaged two trucks without causing any casualties, Kiper added via the Telegram messaging app. 
  • Hezbollah fires missile at Tel Aviv as Israel activates reserve troops in response to rising tension (AP News) – Hezbollah hurled dozens of projectiles into Israel early Wednesday, including a missile aimed at Tel Aviv that was the militant group’s deepest strike yet, and the Israeli military said it would activate reserve troops in response to the rising tensions. The Israeli military said it intercepted the surface-to-surface missile, which marked a further escalation after Israeli strikes on Lebanon killed hundreds of people. The missile set off air-raid sirens in Tel Aviv and across central Israel. There were no reports of casualties or damage. The military said it struck the site in southern Lebanon where the missile was launched. 
  • China test-fires an intercontinental ballistic missile into the Pacific Ocean (AP News) – China test-fired an intercontinental ballistic missile into the Pacific Ocean on Wednesday, stirring security concerns in the region already tense over Beijing’s territorial claims and rivalry with the U.S. The ICBM carried a dummy warhead and fell into a designated area of the sea, the Defense Ministry said in a statement posted to social media. The launch by the People’s Liberation Army’s Rocket Force was part of routine annual training, complied with international law and was not directed against any country or target, according to the statement. 

Demonstrations 

  • Strike by more than 1,000 Samsung workers enters a third week in India (AP News) – A strike by more than 1,000 workers at a Samsung India Electronics plant has entered its third week, and management is at an impasse over their demands for recognition of the employees’ union and higher pay, a workers union spokesman said on Wednesday. The employees strike in the plant near Chennai, the capital of the southern state of Tamil Nadu, started on Sept. 9 with a key demand for a 25-30% pay hike in the average monthly salary of 30,000-35,000 rupees ($425), said K.C. Gopi Kumar, the spokesman for the Samsung India Electronics workers union.
  • Bolivia – Political Crisis (ERCC) – On Sunday 22/09, pro-government supporters and security forces in Bolivia clashed with protesters loyal to the former President Evo Morales. Rival groups hurled firecrackers, homemade explosives and stones at each other while police fired tear gas in the city of El Alto. Morales – who was president from 2006 to 2019 – has been leading thousands of supporters in a week-long march to the capital La Paz. At least 34 people have been injured since the start of the protests.   

Environment 

  • Ecuador – Wildfires (ERCC) – On 24 September, a raging wildfire filled Ecuador’s capital of Quito with smoke and caused disruptions in the streets. According to the National Risk Management Secretariat, three houses have been affected in the residential areas of Bellavista and González Suárez. On 25 September, the Government has announced a non-working day and schools will be closed. The Government has mobilised the Armed Forces, the Police and all Fire Fighting units to combat the fires. Some of the severely affected neighbourhoods – Bellavista, Guápulo – have been evacuated. 
  • Mexico, Cuba, United States – Tropical cyclone HELENE (ERCC) – A new tropical cyclone named HELENE formed over the central-western Caribbean Sea on 23 September in the afternoon (UTC) and started moving north toward the Yucatán channel, between eastern Mexico and western Cuba, strenghtening. On 25 September at 6.00 UTC its centre was located over the sea in the Yucatán channel, approximately 100 km south-east of the Cancun city area, Mexico and around 1,000 km south of the Florida panhandle, north-western Florida, USA, with maximum sustained winds of 95 km/h (tropical storm).
