World Status Report

This report intends to give the UTD Community a snapshot of international risks, and other issues as reported by the linked media and official sources from the U.S. and other countries. 

More health and security information for each country can be found in the travel advisories issued by the governments of the United States, Canada, the UK, New Zealand, and Australia, and the CDC, ECDC, and WHO sites. Not all advise in these sites will apply to US travelers. 

Security 

  • Lebanon crisis: 90,000 displaced in last 72 hours (UN News) – A new humanitarian crisis is unfolding at Lebanon’s border with Syria as thousands of people flee Israeli shelling linked to the war in Gaza, UN humanitarians said on Thursday, just as Israel premier Benyamin Netanyahu arrived in New York for the UN General Assembly. Lebanon – Escalation of hostilities and displacement (ERCC) – Lebanon is experiencing a dramatic escalation in hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah. Casualties between 17 and 24 September amount to 5,505 wounded and 657 dead, with 72 more dead and 400 wounded on 25 September. The rapidly deteriorating situation is putting a major strain on the already overstretched health and shelter sectors notably. Continuing strikes have triggered significant new population displacements of more than 100,000 people over the last few days, bringing the total of internally displaced people (IDPs) since October 2023 to over 200,000. In addition, there are reports of Lebanese and Syrian civilians fleeing into Syria. 
  • Sudan army launches major attack on capital Khartoum (BBC News) – Sudan’s army has launched a major offensive against the powerful paramilitary group it is fighting in the country’s civil war, targeting areas in the capital it lost at the start of the conflict. In dawn strikes on Thursday, government forces shelled Rapid Support Forces (RSF) bases in the capital Khartoum, and Bahri to its north. 
  • Russian missiles and drones target Kyiv for 5 hours and hit Ukraine’s power grid (AP News) – Ukraine’s air defenses battled an overnight Russian aerial attack on the capital Kyiv for five hours, officials said Thursday, as missiles and drones again hammered the Ukrainian power grid. The Kyiv attack injured at least two people, Ukraine’s Emergency Service said. A kindergarten, a gas pipe and around 20 cars were damaged in the city, said the Kyiv Military Administration. 
  • Putin proposes new rules for using nuclear weapons (BBC News) – Russia would consider an attack from a non-nuclear state that was backed by a nuclear-armed one to be a “joint attack”, in what could be construed as a threat to use nuclear weapons in the war in Ukraine. 
  • Pakistani security forces say they killed 8 militants in a raid in the restive northwest (AP News) – Troops also seized weapons and ammunition from the insurgents’ hideout after an intense shootout in North Waziristan, a district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, it said in a statement. The military provided no details about the slain militants, including their affiliation. Such operations often target the Pakistani Taliban, also known as Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan, or TTP. 

Environment 

  • Chad – Floods (ERCC) – The humanitarian impact of the widespread flooding caused by heavy rainfall that has been affecting central and southern Chad since the end of July continues to grow. The worst affected provinces are Lac, Mayo-Kebbi Est, Mandoul, Sila, Tandjilé and Batah. As of 25 September, 503 fatalities, 1.7 millions of affected people, at least 212,000 destroyed houses and more than 355,000 ha of crops destroyed. 
  • Ecuador – Wildfires (ERCC) – Since 24 September, several wildfires have been burning around the capital, Quito, resulting in casualties and damage. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, more than 30,000 ha have been affected by forest fires and drought in Ecuador. According to media reports, as of 26 September, six people have been injured, including two firefighters, and thousands of people have been evacuated, particularly in the area of Guapulo and González Suárez districts, north-east of Quito. School classes have been suspended until 27 September. National authorities have deployed 2,000 firefighters and 130 vehicles to fight the wildfires and a state of emergency has been declared in Quito. 
  • Cameroon – Floods (ERCC) – The death toll and damage caused by the heavy rainfall that has been affecting the Far North region of Cameroon, bordering with Chad and Nigeria since mid-August, continues to rise. According to UNICEF and DG ECHO reports, as of 25 September, at least 30 people died, 155,000 people have been displaced, and some 365,000 people have been affected. In addition,262 schools, 56,084 houses and more than 82,500 ha of crops have been destroyed. 

Health 

  • Invisible killer: What is antimicrobial resistance? (UN News) – Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is an invisible killer, which is directly responsible for 1.3 million deaths and a contributing factor to five million other fatalities every year. Everyone seems to have had a family member or friend who has either gotten seriously ill or died due to acquiring an infection that did not respond to prescribed medicines, and the underlying reason was often antimicrobial resistance. Yet, there are many ways of addressing this threat, from hygiene and sanitation to vaccination and avoiding overuse or misuse of medicines.
