Security
- Israel issues more evacuation warnings in Lebanon, signals wider offensive (PBS) – The Israeli military on Thursday warned people to evacuate a city and other communities in southern Lebanon that are north of a U.N.-declared buffer zone, signaling that it may widen a ground operation launched earlier this week against the Hezbollah militant group.
- Myanmar – Airstrikes, displacement (ERCC) – The Myanmar military is conducting intense airstrikes on opposition-controlled Lashio, the biggest city in northern Shan State, near the border with China. 200,000 people have reportedly fled Lashio, out of a population of 250,000.
- 2 Swedish teens are held in custody over blasts near Israeli Embassy in Copenhagen (AP News) – Two Swedish teenagers were jailed Thursday in pre-trial detention in connection with two predawn explosions in the vicinity of the Israeli Embassy in Copenhagen a day earlier. Prosecutors said investigators were establishing “whether the motive could be a terror attack.” No one was injured in the blasts on early Wednesday in a neighborhood with several foreign diplomatic missions, though the nearby Jewish school was closed following the explosions.
- Russia launches major drone attack on Ukraine, damages energy infrastructure (Reuters) – Russian forces launched a major drone attack overnight on 15 Ukrainian regions, causing damage to energy infrastructure and residential buildings, authorities said on Thursday. The Ukrainian air force said it had shot down 78 out of 105 Russian drones during the assault, with 23 more likely impacted by active electronic jamming.
Health
- CDC Level 2 – Marburg in Rwanda (CDC) – the Republic of Rwanda reported cases of Marburg virus disease (Marburg). Several districts have reported confirmed cases. Local health authorities in Rwanda are working to identify illnesses and conduct investigations, strengthen surveillance, identify sources of transmission, and educate communities and the public about the risks and dangers of Marburg.
- Rwanda’s Marburg fever deaths rise to 11 as its source is still being investigated (AP News) – Marburg hemorrhagic fever has killed 11 people in Rwanda, health authorities said, as the East African country continues to investigate the source of an outbreak first traced among patients in health facilities. There are 36 confirmed cases of the disease that manifests like Ebola, with 25 of them in isolation, according to the Rwandan government’s latest update.
- WHO reports new MERS case in Saudi Arabia (CIDRAP) – The World Health Organization (WHO) reported today that it has been notified of a human case of MERS-CoV (Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus) in Saudi Arabia. The case, which was reported by Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Health, involves a man from the Eastern Region aged between 50 and 55 years with underlying health conditions who developed fever, cough, shortness of breath, and palpitations on August 28. He was admitted to a hospital on August 31, and a nasopharyngeal swab returned a positive result for MERS-CoV on September 4.
