Security
- Ukrainian drone strikes another arms depot inside Russia (AP News) – A Ukrainian drone struck an important arms depot inside Russia, the Ukraine military said Wednesday, three weeks after another drone blasted a major Russian armory and three days after a drone smashed into a key oil terminal in Russia-occupied Crimea.
- More airlines fly over Afghanistan in last week as Middle East tensions rise (Reuters) – Airlines have diverted more flights over Afghanistan over the past week to avoid Iranian airspace, data shows, adding to journey times and fuel costs in the latest disruption for routes between Asia and Europe as tensions in the Middle East escalate. Flights over Afghanistan were already growing in recent months, but expectations of an Israeli response to an Iranian ballistic missile attack on Israel last week have furthered that trend, data from flight tracker FlightRadar24 shows.
- Israeli offensive in hard-hit northern Gaza kills dozens and threatens hospitals (AP News) – A large-scale Israeli operation in northern Gaza has killed dozens of people and threatens to shut down three hospitals over a year into the war with Hamas, Palestinian officials and residents said Wednesday. Heavy fighting was underway in Jabaliya, where Israeli forces have carried out several major operations over the course of the war and then returned as militants regroup. The entire north, including Gaza City, has suffered heavy destruction and has been largely isolated by Israeli forces since late last year.
- Six wounded in stabbing attack in Israel, police say (Reuters) – At least six people were wounded, two of them seriously, in a stabbing attack in the Israeli city of Hadera on Wednesday. Of the six people rushed to the hospital, at least two were in serious condition, according to medical officials. Israel has been on high security alert since the Hamas assault a year ago sparked the war in Gaza, while a the conflict with Hezbollah in Lebanon continues to escalate.
Environment
- India – Severe weather and floods (ERCC) – On 5-6 October, torrential rain hit several districts in northern Karnataka state, including Ballari and Bengaluru, causing floods and resulting in casualties and damage. According to national authorities and media, four people died due to severe weather-related incidents, two people have been injured, and almost 100 houses were damaged.
- Chad – Floods, update (ERCC) – Heavy rainfall continued to affect western, central and southern Chad, in particular Lac, Mandoul, Moyen-Chari, Tandjilé, Mayo-Kebbi Est and Batha provinces since late July, causing severe floods and rivers overflow, particularly the Logone and the Chari rivers that have resulted in an increased number of casualties and widespread damage. UN OCHA reports, as of 8 October, a total of 576 fatalities and nearly 1,942,000 affected people across the aforementioned provinces, among which the Lac province is the worst affected.
