World Status Report

This report intends to give the UTD Community a snapshot of international risks, and other issues as reported by the linked media and official sources from the U.S. and other countries. 

More health and security information for each country can be found in the travel advisories issued by the governments of the United States, Canada, the UK, New Zealand, and Australia, and the CDC, ECDC, and WHO sites. Not all advise in these sites will apply to US travelers. 

Security 

  • Sudan – Conflict (ERCC) – The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) launched a major attack across eastern Aj Jazirah state, following the defection of one if its commanders to the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF). RSF fighters reportedly shot at civilians indiscriminately, perpetrated acts of sexual violence against women and girls, committed widespread looting and burned down farms. Over 30 villages have been severely impacted by the retaliation. A local women’s right group is reporting over 1 000 deaths and documented 25 cases of sexual violence. UN-OCHA confirmed at least 124 civilian deaths, including 10 children. 
  • Israeli strike kills dozens in north Gaza residential block (Reuters) – At least 93 Palestinians killed or missing in four-storey house hit by missile, says Gaza health ministry. Gaza health ministry says healthcare system in north Gaza has collapsed. Israel says it’s waging north Gaza assault against regrouping Hamas militants 
  • Canada alleges Indian minister Amit Shah behind plot to target Sikh separatists (Reuters) – The Canadian government alleged on Tuesday that Indian Minister of Home Affairs Amit Shah, a close ally of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, was behind the plots to target Sikh separatists on Canadian soil. The Indian government did not immediately respond but has dismissed Canada’s prior accusations as baseless, denying any involvement. 
  • North Korea and Russia send political shockwaves with Ukraine war moves (Reuters) – North Korea’s foreign minister arrived in Russia on Tuesday for talks as the Russia-Ukraine war appeared to take a dangerous new turn, with NATO and South Korea expressing alarm that North Korean troops could soon be joining in on Moscow’s side.

Health 

  • CDC updates its recommendation for pneumococcal vaccination (CDC) – CDC now recommends adults get vaccinated against pneumococcal disease at 50 years old, lowering the age from 65 years.  Lowering the age for pneumococcal vaccination gives more adults the opportunity to protect themselves from pneumococcal disease at the age when risk of infection substantially increases. 
  • WHO report shows global tuberculosis cases are rising (CIDRAP) – Tuberculosis (TB) is on the rise and has once again overtaken COVID-19 as the world’s leading infectious disease killer, according to the latest report from the World Health Organization (WHO). The Global Tuberculosis Report 2024, released today, shows 8.2 million people were newly diagnosed with TB in 2023, a figure that represents the highest number of TB cases recorded by the WHO since it began global TB monitoring in 1995. It also marks a significant increase from the 7.5 million new TB cases reported in 2022.
