Security
- Manhunt under way in Berlin after bag of explosives left at train station (Reuters) – German police are searching for a man who abandoned a bag of explosives at a Berlin train station and ran away after being stopped by federal officers, according to police. “We are investigating all possibilities,” a police spokesperson told Reuters on Thursday, adding that authorities had not yet been able to identify the suspect.

- Greek police say fatal Athens apartment blast was likely caused by improvised bomb (AP News) – Greek police said Friday that an explosion in an Athens apartment that killed a man and severely wounded a woman appeared to have been caused by an improvised bomb.
- Israel pounds Beirut’s southern suburbs after US truce push (Reuters) – Israel pounded Beirut’s southern suburbs with a series of powerful airstrikes early on Friday morning after issuing evacuation orders to residents.
Demonstrations
- Hundreds march to mark 35 years of Pride Johannesburg in South Africa (AP News) – Hundreds of people marched Saturday in South Africa to mark 35 years of Pride Johannesburg, an annual event that has been critical in advocating equal rights for the LGBTQ+ community.
Environment
- Vietnam, China – Tropical Cyclone TRAMI, update (ERCC) – The passage of Tropical cyclone TRAMI over eastern Vietnam on 27 October, Hainan island in southern China experienced heavy rain and strong winds that also resulted in casualties and damage. In Vietnam, 5 people died in Quang Binh province and 5 others were injured. Moreover, 143,424 people have been affected and 318 houses damaged. In China, seven people died and another person is still missing across Hainan island.
- Spain hunts for missing after deadly floods, more storms forecast (Reuters) – Spanish rescue teams scoured flooded homes and stranded cars on Thursday for those still missing after devastating floods in the Valencia region that killed at least 95 people, with forecasts of more bad weather prompting storm alerts further north.
Health
- Severe hunger continues to affect several countries (UN News) – “Catastrophic levels of acute food insecurity” bordering on starvation are expected to impact hundreds of thousands of people in coming months, driven principally by violence and conflict. Five hunger hotspots are of particular concern: Haiti, Mali, the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPT), South Sudan and Sudan, UN agencies said
- South Sudan reports cholera outbreak in wake of flooding (CIDRAP) – Amid unprecedented flooding across several parts of the country, South Sudan has declared a cholera outbreak, with 50 suspected cases reported so far. The outbreak’s location is Renk County in northern South Sudan, a border area where refugees are fleeing armed conflict in neighboring Sudan, the WHO said.

- Dozens of North Korean defectors caught by secret police (Reuters) – More than 100 North Koreans have gone missing after being caught by secret police while trying to defect from the isolated country or even for trying to call relatives in South Korea, a Seoul-based human rights group said on Thursday.
