Security
- US prohibits airlines from flying to Haiti and UN suspends flights after planes were shot by gangs (AP News) – The Federal Aviation Administration prohibited U.S. airlines from flying to Haiti for 30 days after gangs shot three planes and the United Nations also Tuesday temporarily suspended flights to Port-au-Prince, limiting humanitarian aid coming into the country.
- Russia stages first missile attack on Kyiv since August (Reuters) – Blasts boomed across Kyiv on Wednesday morning after officials said Russia launched its first missile attack on the Ukrainian capital since August, forcing elderly women and small children to take shelter in an underground metro station. Ukrainians have been waiting for a big missile attack for months, worried that it could deal a new blow to the hobbled energy system and cause long blackouts as winter sets in.
Demonstrations
- French farmers to protest Mercosur deal boosting South American imports (France 24) – French farmers have announced a new wave of protests next week against the European Union’s planned free trade agreement with the Mercosur trading bloc, saying an increase in agricultural imports from South America will hurt their livelihoods.
Environment
- Malaysia – Floods (ERCC) – Heavy rainfall has been affecting the Peninsular Malaysia, in particular the southern state of Pahang since 10 November, causing floods that have resulted in population displacement and damage. As of 13 November, a total of more than 450 evacuated people, across the Raub district, Pahang state.
- Yemen – Landslide (ERCC) – A rock fall occurred on 11 November in the village of Beit Al-Baras, Al-Mahwit province, western Yemen resulting in casualties and damage. According to media, at least seven people died, several people were injured and homes were damaged by the event. Rescue operations have been activated to help those affected.
- Democratic Republic of the Congo – Floods (ERCC) – Since the beginning of November, Djugu Territory, Ituri province, north-eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo has been experiencing heavy rain and floods due to the overflow of Lake Albert, resulting in people displacement and damage. According to UN OCHA, 11,700 people have been displaced, and over 160 houses and 20 fishing boats have been damaged or destroyed.
- Delhi’s pollution turns ‘severe’ as temperatures, wind speeds drop (Reuters) – Air pollution in India’s national capital increased to ‘severe’ on an official index on Wednesday for the first time this season as temperatures and wind speeds dropped, reducing visibility and affecting some flights. Delhi overtook Pakistan’s Lahore as the world’s most polluted city in Swiss group IQ Air’s live rankings, and India’s pollution control authority said the national capital territory’s 24-hour air quality index (AQI) score had touched 418.

- Mpox vaccination shortage delays Kinshasa’s drive against outbreak (Reuters) – Democratic Republic of Congo has been unable to launch an mpox vaccination campaign in the capital Kinshasa due to a shortage of doses, the country’s response leader said, while cases countrywide continue to rise, especially among children.
