Security
- Sudan war deaths are likely much higher than recorded (Reuters) – More than 61,000 people are estimated to have died in Khartoum state during the first 14 months of Sudan’s war, with evidence suggesting the toll from the devastating conflict is significantly higher than previously recorded, according to a new report by researchers in Britain and Sudan. The estimate includes some 26,000 people who suffered violent deaths, a higher figure than one currently used by the United Nations for the entire country.
- Israel hits Beirut again, ceasefire terms in focus (Reuters) – A senior Lebanese official has signaled that Hezbollah is ready to pull its forces away from the Lebanese-Israeli border in any ceasefire, while rejecting Israel’s demand for freedom to act against the Iran-backed group in Lebanon in the future. An Israeli minister indicated that a ceasefire was closer than at any point since the war began, though he said a sticking point was ensuring Israel retains freedom to act inside Lebanon should any deal be violated.
- Niger junta bans French aid group amid tensions with France (AP News) – Niger’s military junta has banned the French aid group Agency for Technical Cooperation and Development, or Acted, from working in the country amid tensions with France. The Ministry of the Interior signed a decree on Tuesday withdrawing the nonprofit organization’s license to operate, without providing reasons for the decision.
- France mounts security operation for Israel match after Amsterdam violence (BBC) – Thousands of police are being deployed in Paris to ensure security at Thursday’s France-Israel football international, a week after violence in Amsterdam in which Maccabi Tel Aviv fans came under attack. Paris police chief Laurent Nuñez says 4,000 officers will be on patrol, 2,500 at the Stade de France in the northern Paris suburbs and the rest on public transport and inside the capital.
- Norway lowers national threat level to moderate from high (Reuters) – Norway’s security service said on Thursday it had lowered the national threat assessment a notch to moderate from high. Norway on Oct. 8 raised its terrorism threat assessment to the second-highest level on a scale from 1 to 5 due to an increased risk of attacks against Jewish and Israeli targets.
- Middle East: Gaza food markets in decay as starvation looms (UN News) – Reports of ongoing bombardments, likely starvation and despair continue to emerge from Gaza where many basic daily staples now “barely exist”, UN humanitarians warned on Wednesday. Fresh foods, eggs, and meat barely exist and the prices of any food available have reached record highs.
Environment
- Indonesia – Volcanic eruption, update (ERCC) – New eruptions have been recorded as well as volcanic earthquakes in the Lewotobi Laki-laki volcano. On 14 November the volcanic ash reached up to 3,000 m above the crater. According to the National Agency for Disaster Countermeasure, 13,116 people have been sheltered across eight evacuation centers, most of them in the Titehena district which is hosting almost 7,000 people.
Health
- India’s capital introduces stricter anti-pollution measures as toxic smog hides Taj Mahal (Reuters) – The world’s most polluted capital, and urged residents to avoid burning coal for heating, to combat worsening air quality that has disrupted flights and obscured the Taj Mahal. The new measures, which include sprinkling water with dust suppressants on roads, as well as mechanized sweeping that would help settle dust, will come into effect from Friday morning.
