World Status Report

This report intends to give the UTD Community a snapshot of international risks, and other issues as reported by the linked media and official sources from the U.S. and other countries. 

More health and security information for each country can be found in the travel advisories issued by the governments of the United States, Canada, the UK, New Zealand, and Australia, and the CDC, ECDC, and WHO sites. Not all advise in these sites will apply to US travelers. 

Security 

  • Netanyahu, in Gaza, says Hamas will no longer rule enclave (Reuters) – Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said during a visit to Gaza on Tuesday that Hamas would not rule the Palestinian enclave after the war had ended and that Israel had destroyed the Islamist group’s military capabilities. Netanyahu also said Israel had not given up trying to locate the 101 remaining hostages believed to be still in the enclave and he offered a $5 million reward for the return of each one. 
  • Israeli strikes kill 33 people in Gaza; hospital in north makes distress call (Reuters) – Israeli forces killed at least 33 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip on Wednesday, including a rescue worker, health officials said, as troops deepened an incursion along the territory’s northern edge, bombarding a hospital and blowing up homes. Medics said at least 12 people were killed in an Israeli strike on a house in the area of Jabalia in northern Gaza earlier on Wednesday, and at least 10 people remained missing as rescue operations continued. Another man was killed in tank shelling nearby, they said. 
  • US shuts Kyiv embassy citing strike threat after Ukraine fires ATACMS at Russia (Reuters) – The United States shut its embassy in Kyiv on Wednesday morning due to what it called the threat of a significant air attack, a day after Ukraine used American missiles to hit a target inside Russia in what Moscow described as an escalation in the war. Later, after an air raid siren in the early afternoon jangled nerves in the capital, Ukraine’s military spy agency said Russia was trying to sow panic by circulating fake online messages about a massive looming missile and drone attack. 

Demonstrations 

  • Greece hit by general strike as thousands of workers protest over high cost of living (AP News) – Thousands of workers marched through the Greek capital Athens on Wednesday as part of a 24-hour general strike called by labor unions to protest the rising cost of living and timed to coincide with the government submitting the 2025 budget to Parliament. Around 12,000 protesters marched through central Athens, while another 5,000 demonstrated in the northern city of Thessaloniki, Greece’s second largest city. 

Environment 

  • Turkey – Landslide (ERCC) – A landslide triggered by heavy rainfall occurred in Çayeli district of the Rize province in north-eastern Turkey on 19 November in the morning, resulting in casualties and damage. As of 20 November, media reports one fatality and four injured people, 91 people have been displaced and one building has been damaged. 
  • Democratic Republic of the Congo – Floods, update (ERCC) – The humanitarian impact of the flooding that has been affecting the Ituri province, in the north-eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, since the beginning of November is still increasing. As of 19 November, at least 55,000 people have been affected in Djugu, Mahagi and Irumu territories in the Ituri province, due to the rising water level of Lake Albert. In addition, several buildings and roads have been damaged. 

Health 

  • South Sudan – Food insecurity (ERCC) – Malnutrition among children under five years old will increase significantly, affecting 2.1 million children, out of which 650,000 are predicted to be severely malnourished during the lean season between April and July 2025, a steep increase of 35% compared to this year. During the lean season, 7.69 million people (62% of the population) are expected to experience high level of food insecurity (IPC3), half a million more than in 2024. 2.53 million people will be in emergency level (IPC4), while 63,000 will face catastrophic level (IPC5).  
  • Bangladesh deaths from dengue cross 400 as outbreak worsens (Reuters). Bangladesh is battling its worst outbreak of dengue in years, with the latest figures showing more than 400 deaths and 78,595 patients admitted to hospitals nationwide, as rising temperatures and a longer monsoon season drive a surge in infections, leaving hospitals struggling to cope, particularly in urban areas.
