World Status Report

This report intends to give the UTD Community a snapshot of international risks, and other issues as reported by the linked media and official sources from the U.S. and other countries. 

More health and security information for each country can be found in the travel advisories issued by the governments of the United States, Canada, the UK, New Zealand, and Australia, and the CDC, ECDC, and WHO sites. Not all advise in these sites will apply to US travelers. 

Security 

  • Gunmen in Central African Republic killed 10 people near a diamond mining town (AP News) – Gunmen in Central African Republic killed six motorcycle taxi drivers and four of their clients near the central diamond mining town of Bria, authorities said Tuesday. The motorcycle taxi drivers and their clients were driving back from a religious ceremony in the town of Ippy to Bria, the capital of the central Haute-Kotto prefecture, when they were ambushed by unidentified gunmen 
  • Haiti – Alarming armed attacks, popular justice, and population movements in Port-au-Prince (ERCC) – According to IOM, 40,000 additional people have been displaced in the metropolitan zone of Port-au-Prince following the gang attacks of 11 November. 40 partners have mobilized responses for emergency shelter, child protection, food security, gender-based violence response, water, health and nutrition, including mobile clinics and protection response through activation of flexible ECHO funding (Crisis Modifiers).  
  • EU Wants to Impose Visa Ban on Chinese Assisting Russian War in Ukraine (Schengen News) – The EU intends to introduce restrictions on foreign individuals who are aiding Russians in relations with the war in Ukraine. Visa bans are expected to be proposed for individuals in this category, while companies risk having their assets frozen. The list of people who can be sanctioned includes 54 names, many of whom are Russians. 

Environment 

  • Tanzania – Floods (ERCC) – Heavy rainfall has been affecting northern Tanzania, in particular the Mara region, bordering with southern Kenya over the past few days, causing floods that have resulted in casualties and damage. As of 27 November, nine fatalities, 40 injured people and a total of approximately 100 affected people across the Tarime district, northern Mara region. In addition, the same source reports a number of displaced families and four severely damaged houses across the affected area. 
  • Sri Lanka – Severe weather (ERCC) – As of 27 November, one fatality and one injured people in the Bandarawela town, Badulla district, Uva province due to the collapse of a wall. In addition, media also report approximately nearly 16,000 affected people across all the aforementioned affected provinces, where the worst affcted area is the Jaffna district, Northern province. 
  • Japan – Earthquake (ERCC) – An earthquake of magnitude 6.1 M at a depth of 10 km occurred on 26 November at 13:47 UTC in the sea at approximately 30 km west of the Noto Peninsula coasts, Honshu Island, central Japan. The epicentre was located approximately 42 km west-north-west of Hakui city, in the Ishikawa prefecture. At least three aftershocks up to 4.9 M hit the same area on 26 November. USGS PAGER estimates that up to 23,000 people were exposed to strong and 1,1 million to moderate shaking. 
  • Democratic Republic of the Congo – Landslide, update (ERCC) – The humanitarian impact of the landslide that occurred in Nkubi village of the Kalehe territory, in South Kivu province, in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo on 22 November, which resulted in casualties and damage, is increasing. As of 27 November, media reports 11 fatalities and three injured people. In addition, at least seven houses have been destroyed and 31 have been damaged. 
  • Bolivia – Floods and landslides,  update (ERCC) – Following the heavy rainfall that affected western Bolivia on 23-24 November and caused floods, rivers overflow and a landslide, the number of casualties has increased. As of 27 November, two fatalities, 26 injured people, more than 30 displaced people, a number of rescued people and around 70 damaged houses due to the overflow of the Pasajahuira river and due to a landslide event occurred in the area of the La Paz capital city.
