Security
- Ecuador police report 10 killed in El Oro province (Reuters) – Ecuadorean police reported on Sunday that officers found 10 dead bodies at a property in Guabo, a community in El Oro province in the Andean country’s south. Violence has exploded throughout Ecuador in recent years, which authorities attribute to gangs of drug traffickers vying for control of territory and smuggling routes. The spiraling crime and violence this year pushed President Daniel Noboa to declare a state of internal armed conflict and designate almost two dozen gangs as terrorist groups.
- Pakistan – Violence, update (ERCC) – Over 130 people have died and 200 have been injured in sectarian violence in Kurram tribal district near the Afghanistan border in the past ten days. Armed clashes broke out last week when a convoy of passenger vehicles was attacked in Lower Kurram, killing more than 52 people, including women and children. Around one million residents are experiencing food and fuel shortages, as electricity, internet, businesses, and major highways have been shut down for 50 days.
- Guinea stadium crush kills 56 people after disputed refereeing decision (Reuters) – A controversial refereeing decision sparked violence and a crush at a soccer match in southeast Guinea, killing 56 people, according to a provisional toll, the government said on Monday, as a witness described scenes of chaos. The fatalities occurred during the final of a tournament in honour of Guinea’s military leader Mamady Doumbouya at a stadium in Nzerekore, one of the West African nation’s largest cities. Fans threw stones, triggering panic and a crush, the government statement said, promising an investigation.

- Ghana risks government shutdown if no budget passed before election (Reuters) – Ghana’s parliament is unlikely to pass a provisional budget before the Dec. 7 general election, former officials and experts say, which risks triggering an unprecedented government shutdown early next year. The West African nation is set to elect a successor to President Nana Akufo-Addo whose two-term mandate ends in January. Typically, a provisional budget is passed in November during election years to cover the gap until the president-elect takes office.
Demonstrations
- More than 200 people detained in Georgia during protests over the suspension of EU talks (AP News) – The ruling Georgian Dream party’s disputed victory in the country’s Oct. 26 parliamentary election, widely seen as a referendum on Georgia’s aspirations to join the EU, has sparked mass demonstrations, with the opposition boycotting the parliament. The opposition and the country’s pro-Western president also accused the vote of being rigged with Moscow’s help. Tens of thousands of demonstrators gathered outside the parliament for the fourth night on Sunday. Some protesters threw fireworks at police who responded by deploying tear gas and water cannon.
Environment
- Sri Lanka – Floods (ERCC) – As of 2 December, the Sri Lanka Disaster Management Centre reports 17 fatalities, including 12 in the Eastern province, 19 injured people, 7,308 displaced in 85 shelters, and at least 475,225 affected people. In addition, more than 2,516 houses have been destroyed and 106 partially damaged.
- Philippines – Floods and landslides (ERCC) – As of 2 December, more than 2,500 evacuated people in 14 evacuation centers across the Northern Mindano region. In addition, the same source reports over 240 evacuated people in six evacuation centers, and a total of 4,260 affected people in the Western Visayas region.
- Three billion people globally impacted by land degradation (UN News) – Three billion people around the world are suffering the impact of poor and degraded land which will “increase levels of migration, stability and insecurity among many communities,” according to the newly-elected President of a UN-backed conference on desertification, drought and land restoration which is taking place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
